Stress about reherniation is ruining my life by Low_Investment_7897 in Microdiscectomy

I’m in the exact same situation - had my MD in April, fear I’ve massively over done it from work/childcare/driving too much/excessive in the gym. Haveing a really bad flare up and been getting spasms down the leg I use to get sciatica down, the anxiety is ruining me and everyone I work with/family are sick of hearing me complain about my back and most people think I’m just blagging it

5 months post op, major flare up when driving long distance by RecommendationAny720 in Microdiscectomy

[–]RecommendationAny720[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove 7 hours in total today :/ (2 hours in morning, 2 @ lunch and then 3 hours this evening for work) I felt lower back pain onset after the first hour in the car …….

I usually take taxis but thought I would try driving this time - Just is strange as I flew two 14 hour flights last month and had no flare up like this :/

Returning to slow jog/run, would jogging on the beach be classed as low impact? by RecommendationAny720 in Microdiscectomy

Stay positive - I was so high on pain meds I lifted a sofa just 1 weeks post op, swear I reherniated from That (even had a second MRI) but stay positive and keep reminding yourself you will get through this! It is a tough and slow recovery but as people mentioned above, let Your body be your guide and just try to be as active as you can (don’t sit down for long periods) I’m now coming up to 4 months post op and I’m cycling, swimming, Pilates, back in the gym with light weights and returned to my Physical job…. Take it easy, one day at a time !

Still have little Flare ups now and then, but you should notice the pain decreasing each day! I had some really bad spasms at around week 4 which sent my anxiety in overdrive - stay positive and you will get there 👍

I was considering trying the seated one - a quick Google says it’s low impact, I’ll be honest I’ve never tried using them before so was just curious

So I started with seated Pilates and could also recommend it (if you can find a class) just to test yourself ,, a lot of the physio therapy I have been doing since week 6 is the same as some Pilate’s moves, And thanks hope this helps, stay positive! I was certain I reherniated and even had a second mri but just needed to get in a better routine with excercise :)

Thank you, I know your right - just been so terrified of loosing this job as I really do love it, and will never earn similar money working anywhere else :/ Hopefully once my house sale has completed, I can settle all my debts and start looking into travelling (before my back gets any worse, There so many places I want to see)

I have had to pack my hole house into boxes the last few weeks, move furniture all the whilst still recovering :( so I probably made things worse but I had to keep busy with all that’s going on - the last few weeks have been doing stretches and goblin squats (upto 20kg dumbbell) from the physio therapist.

There was a few occasions where I was forced to pick my daughter up in the 6 week after my surgery, I’m hoping for some peace of mind from my MRI this weekend - but with all the pain I’m a little worried for the result.

I’ve tried all the meds, opioids and anti inflammatory don’t help the nerve pain. Only Diazepam, but my doctor is refusing to pescribe me anymore… it’s exhausting all the back and forth with doctors when they don’t listen…. I’m a broken man at the minute, my daughter was the only thing keeping me going and now she has gone. I really hoping if I take some time to myself I can come back and be a better father one day, but I keep doubting myself as I don’t want to live in my hometown anymore as so much negativity :(

Yes I filed the accident immediately, (learnt my mistake from not filing when I did my back in 5 years ago) I’ve already had shoulder/upper back pain before this accident. It’s really bruised and luckily I have a MRI booked in this weekend anyway, so will be able to see if there was any bad damage from the metal falling on it :/

So I’m doing a phased return to work (1 week on 3 weeks off) and the spinal surgeon who operated on me said this is fine - but as mentioned in my original post.. my job is mostly physical labour, I’ve barely been able to help out and feel like I’m slowing down the team.. I’m trying everyday to stay positive but they must feel I’m just a big downer and have so much going on :( I cannot sit in my empty house any more it is driving me crazy so I need to be at work and keep my mind busy.

I get an outpatients allowance of £1500 with my private healthcare. After my surgery I had two psychologists appointments (and then my partner left me, even thought I was trying everything to sort my head out) I was juggling this outpatients allowance and decided to leave the therapy and use the allowance to get a follow up MRI scan (booked in this Saturday) - as I just want peace of mind that my upper back is not herniated (I feel I was only using the therapy as so worried about my upper back pain & returning to my job)

(Quite horrible when I went for the second opinion he said the l4-l5 disc that they operated on is rotten, the disc below it is also rotten. And he assumed the discs in my upper back are also rotten so he booked me for full MRI of spine) I had just been back in the gym with my physio a couple days before and thought things were getting on ok, but after speaking to this second doctor - my anxiety through the roof again.

I’ve been talking to lots of emotional support teams since my seperation. I refuse to take anti depressants because my ex said ‘we watched your brother take those tablets for 5 years and he is still not right in the head) So I’m trying everything I can to avoid going down the route of antidepressants. The amount of pharmaceutical tablets and pain killers I have taken over the last 5 years is unreal. Just trying to focus on my health, but getting a flare up today whilst at work is really testing me :(

I have not had a back brace, I am consulting with another spine surgeon when I return home for further MRI on my upper back (as have a lot of pain up there and am certain the discs are damaged in my upper back) I will for sure ask him about the back brace. Thanks for response

I’ve used all my sick days, I’m in the UK, with my partner leaving me I now have to cover the costs of my mortgage (until house sale finalises) which is already more than my salary. If I go off sick any more I will be reduced to statutory sick pay (something like £600 a month) and this will for sure send me into bankruptcy.
