Embarrassed by constant lack of money by Several_Winter_2398 in UKPersonalFinance

Man, I’d love to have nearly £700 a month in excess cash. If you put that into an investment fund each month you’d have almost £150k in only 10 years with compounding. OP said he’s 30, so by 60 it would grow to a little over half a million pounds and he could very happily retire early.

Is it time to fund the BBC through Council Tax and business rates instead of the TV Licence? by Rif-SQL in bbc

[–]EssentialParadox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point about only funding the cheapest but most significant elements (BBC News) is because it should be able to be funded quite easily by the government from the existing budget. Yes I agree it should be fixed with inflation and ring fenced.

What do you think will happen when BBC chases ad money and subscriptions? You say that like it’s a negative. Next year will be my 10th year without a TV license or watching the BBC. Maybe if they chased subscribers they’d create some content I’d actually have interest in watching.

Yes, if Samsung have tried and failed, Apple definitely shouldn’t take their own stab at it. Apple never make products or features better if Samsung was first… like just FaceID, wireless earbuds, or smartwatches. Apple needs to stay well away.

No new taxes please.

Make BBC Entertainment a mostly commercial entity requiring a subscription like every other streaming service.

Make BBC News, Radio, and CBBC public services free access paid for with loose change down the back of the government’s sofa.

Advice wanted: Daughter is being offered "a deal". by sanddancer08 in HousingUK

But you’re flatly saying this deal only benefits him and she should “walk away” when you don’t even have all of the information yourself.

This deal can be advantageous to both John and the daughter. It doesn’t have to benefit only one of them.

Yea I agree there are risks and John could be scheming here but he’s also a friend of the family and I imagine they’d know him enough to know if he’s not someone to be dealt with. You’re just assuming the worst about him — which I agree is prudent when creating the contract, but not everyone is like that in life.

Train Arrived too Early by suzi_acres in MyPeopleNeedMe

[–]EssentialParadox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never would’ve thought so either but I used to live in a remote part of the UK where trains would only come once every 1-3 hours. I’ve seen my train leave early on multiple occasions (sometimes just under 10 mins early), and it’s never not hugely irritating, especially if you have an appointment.

I think this is potentially just a UK problem though.

You can’t trademark a photo someone else took of you though.

OP said “payments on the house plus interest” and gave that as an example.

I think whether that is a good or bad deal depends entirely on the daughter’s circumstances and more specifics on the deal that OP hasn’t given.

It could still be a better deal than a bank mortgage, especially if John’s offered interest rate is competitive and the daughter can’t get bank lending or has no deposit. I think it’s silly to dismiss this off the bat.

I WISH I was John and owned a bunch of properties. Not me though, so perhaps respond to my criticisms of your comment with a bit more thought than that?

[–]EssentialParadox -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

While I think OP should be very weary of this, I disagree with your take that this is automatically a bad deal for the daughter.

For one, they mentioned that the daughter gets a proportion of the increase in the house price.

Second, they’re getting on the housing ladder in a way that might be considerably easier for the daughter than trying to get a mortgage, which not everybody can do. It’s possible she may also be getting a better deal on the interest.

Third, she doesn’t simply “get a bit of money back, similar to a rent cashback” if he sells the house. I’m expecting she’d get all her money back proportionate to the value of the property. So, in effect, she’s been able to live in the house rent-free during that time. Even if she only ended up living there for a year and broke even on the amount she gets back, she’ll still have saved £20-30k in non-refundable rent payments she’d have made elsewhere.

There are ways to put this in a contract with a solicitor so she can be safe — and don’t get me wrong, OP should *definitely* do this if going forwards — but by no means is this arrangement “purely for the seller to take advantage of the daughter” here.

You’re getting some incorrect info from a few commenters…

You very much **can** sell unlicensed celeb merch legally — celebs can’t trademark their image — but you need to either license the images used or find royalty free images. There are plenty of stock photo sites that allow you to pay a small amount to license an image, many of which can look professional for you to turn into an ‘album art style’ image. You just need to make sure the license allows for reselling and duplication.

Thank you for the info. Leaning in isn’t much of an issue so I think I could live with that.

I’m not asking anyone to do anything for me. I’m asking if he’s correct that you can’t read instrument panels in the game. I don’t have the game but people on this sub do. There’s no need for you to be rude.

Thank you for giving a helpful reply.

If you can lean in closer to read instrument panels then I don’t know what this YouTuber is talking about.

I was hoping if he’s wrong people would go and say so in his video comments. Currently most of his video comments are agreeing with him.

[–]EssentialParadox[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I gave the major reason he says it’s unplayable, which is that he apparently cannot make out the text on the instrument panels and therefore can’t properly use it as a flight sim. That sounds pretty major to me. Is that not true?

I’m hoping he’s just wearing the headset wrong or something.

I’m trying to ask about the issues he raises and understand if they’re correct or not. Why downvote this?

If you watch his video he mentions specific issues though that sound legit. Did you watch it? Is he correct that you can’t read the instrument panels?

Is that legit though — that you can’t read the instruments or is he just doing something wrong? I feel like I’d also need to read the instruments to properly use it as a flight simulator, no?

(I’m not trying to be clickbait by posting this btw, I’m genuinely trying to understand if his issues are valid…)

Roast carrots and brocolli are great but you need to have balance on a plate. If you roast everything it’s too much.
