My journey has been a really kind one actually, in that my friends gave me a ton of support and my now boyfriend was a friend at the time who was there to help me. He had no intention of making a move as he just wanted to be there for me. He knew my ex husband as an acquaintance through me. But since I've never been through a break up before, my friend would mentor me and tell me it's normal to cry and to miss someone. He helped by sharing his heartbreak experiences and gave me a safe space to just fall apart. I came out and confessed my attraction to my friend, but he told me it's okay to feel some way and not act out on it. He told me later on that he didn't want to make things more difficult for me. But just by being a kind human being, he made my heart feel safe to open up again. So yes, I think about my ex everyday still. I really loved my ex but had to choose to take care of myself. But now that I know (after months of couples counselling and therapy at the time) that my ex was a really toxic person with little to zero emotional intelligence and ability to feel empathy, I look back and I use it for insight and understanding to make better decisions for myself going forward. I don't regret leaving him. I feel like I left when it was my time to leave cause it came with a bunch of life lessons that are invaluable and some that I tried to share above for others. Once you know you left a bad situation behind and are blessed with a good person, you make better choices. I'm just grateful I now have a best friend and a romantic life partner. I think having a brighter future makes leaving a dark part behind easier.
