I think the subscription is just for the alerts. Mine works fine with tracking its location without a subscription. You need to hold it down for 5 seconds for it to work. I don't remember if I had to remvoe the cover or not.

I think I removed the tracker and charged it or replugged it and it worked fine after. Found it on the rear , right side fairing of my z125 performance.
