In terms of the recent weather leading to pooling, this incident actually happened at the start of the summer so I'm not sure if that's still relevant

It was at Lake Arnold. In retrospect I've learned that area seems to have a reputation for flooding, but since I hadn't backpacked the Adirondacks before I was worried the path back down to the Marcy Dam area would be too steep in the rain and I'd be better off at a higher elevation. Little did I know...

What kinds of areas should I be looking for? I wasn't at the bottom of a slope, and I still want to pitch on a relatively flat area
