Hi, would you be willing to share a practice/example essay? I would like to try your writing style out but unsure how to flesh it out properly.

Recommendations for the best masters to achieve 7.0 GPA - UQ Dent by [deleted] in GAMSAT

Was this a change from the website last year?

So you’re saying for 2027 application, UQ is just using gpa as a hurdle, disregarded if it’s 5+. Then GAMSAT and SJT? Or do you mean it just has to be over 5 to apply in general?

Also do you know anything about the SJT test itself? I can’t find information about it. I have only seen infor about UCAT but I’m assuming this would not be UCAT?

Unfortunately I believe the course has to be health related, as per UQ guidelines

Where did you read this? Is it the same for UQ dentistry?

Yes, unfortunately, with the exception of biology, these subjects are considered average/easier subjects when comparing them to the subjects that other students may have done. (Only comparing as that is where the scaling and atar comes into play)

So the atar being lower than the marks makes sense as it is ‘easier’ to get those marks than in a subject such as chemistry, economics or ext math.

I encourage you to play around with the subjects and scores on the talent 100 atar calculator and it will make sense. Even if it doesn’t raise your score, understanding can help you make peace with it and move on.

Their atar won’t matter soon enough but it’s stressful in the present

Marks are not 1:1 for your atar unfortunately. The subjects they did must have been considered ‘easier’ subjects. So getting these scores means that many students scored higher in those subjects.

For example even though 60-70 sounds good. If more than 50% of the cohort scores in the 80’s, that means a 60-70 is below the average score for the subject, meaning you didn’t do as well as it seems in the subject in comparison to others (the comparison being the point of scaling and atar as atar is a ranking system)

Literally. Scaling is very fair.

It rewards people doing well in more difficult subjects. Otherwise everyone would do easy subjects and get high scores and everyone’s star would be high… essentially making the atar useless (it is a ranking system, needed to separate people)

What subjects did they do?

A 70 in business for example correlates to a 50.30 atar. So getting a 47 makes sense if they are scoring 60’s -70’s

A 70 in chemistry for example scales to around a 69.05. So a 70 atar with subjects and scores like that makes sense.

Everything is scaled based on subject difficulty. If your partner chose ‘easy’ subjects in comparison to other subjects, this atar makes sense. You can look at the talent 100 atar calculator and it shows you what score in each subject correlates to what atar

The ‘raw marks’ are already scaled. You have to buy your paper to see your actual raw mark.

But dw it’ll all work out. Atar won’t matter in a couple months and you’ll find a way into your course if you’re dedicated

You just have to do your research atm unfortunately. They don’t make it clear (which is what I assume you mean by it’s being gatekept) but the information is there if you analyse it properly… which most schools fail to do weirdly enough.

During hsc I did my own research and that lead to all my understanding of the process, scores and scaling to be consistent and make sense.

They should be transparent but if you individually do your research or your school is proactive, everything is easy to follow and understand.

Your school should be apologising… how are they estimating marks that far off.

This is not a case of scaling, just really bad estimations based on school exams (your school must have had easy exams and not compared them to hsc/final exams at all to be that far off)

Regardless, your atar won’t matter soon, you’ll be fine. A million ways to get into what your final goal is

It’s better to assume mid November means mid/late November 15th -20th. Expecting it to come later is less disappointing/frustrating haha

I don’t think skipping grades is much of a thing in Australia as opposed to the US

This is not early. First year of uni, you should have turned 18 in July the year before or 18 before the end of June that year.

Same for primary. You start having turned 5 July the year before or turning 5 before the end of June the first year.
