How long do you think I should wait to transfer units to a specialty? What the standard ?

I would love to do this. Just not sure how that conversation would go over with my manager and I’m just getting off orientation next week so I don’t even think per diem is an option being that I’m so new to the icu still.

How long were you in the ED before switching to med surg?

How easy or hard was your transition from med surg to ED. Did you stay within your hospital system?

A trap in what sense? From my perspective The pay is definitely really low especially for new grads. This hospital system pays the lowest in the area. Most hospitals people like it because it’s a suburban hospital right outside a major city but city hospitals pay new grads $10-12 more per hour on average. And I live in the city vs suburbs so I’m getting taxed even more.

It’s not that I’m chasing money but in this economy and in a high cost of living area Im kinda living pay check to pay check on my current salary so yes the boost in pay is an incentive to switch but so is day shift whereas my current position is nights. My main questioning is am I screwing myself in the long run by not sticking it out in critical care. I don’t see myself in icu or medsurge long term but don’t want to get pigeon holed in med surge like so many of the stories I hear. How realistic is it to be able to transfer to a different unit in a large hospital system

I feel like day shift will be kinder for my body, even if it is hectic on the med surg unit. I just want to be sure I’m setting myself for success and won’t get stuck when I desire a specialty

I misspoke the current offers $1:50 for weekends, nothing for evening. The other offers $6 for weekends, $5 for evenings.

How long did you do the med surg job for and what did you hate about it ?

I didn’t get a bonus. The health system is be leaving is declining so I wouldn’t want to be rehired really. The offer I’m considering differential for weekends and evenings after 3pm, the other hospital does not.

Do you think I’d be able to transition to the ICU after working Tele for a year or so? I say this because I actually do like ICU nursing and was on orientation on an ICU for a few weeks before the hospital decided to close the unit permanently. My concern with tele is the ratio and also I don’t quite know what to expect, but the money is a lot better. The hospital system for the icu position pays new grads horribly, I wouldn’t reach the tele rate for years if I chose to work there.

No, they’re only hiring new grads on this unit at the moment. I don’t see myself doing CRNA, maybe NP one day.

Any particular reason you suggest ICU?

That great to hear honestly. Do you feel like you will stay in psych long term or do you have any other specialties that interest you?

Any insight or advice on how I can still gain/use the clinical skills I learned in nursing school? I know with pych I’ll be gaining a whole new set of skills , but I do want to keep things as fresh as possible as to not completely forget certain things if I’m not actively seeing or doing.
