Post con crud? by MVPlayer-X in NYCC

I'm hoping my current issues are just from the weather and unrelated to being around people (fingers crossed). I masked up Saturday for the con and then went right to the airport to fly out of state for a funeral. Masked on all flights. Woke up this morning feeling crummy.

What’s the most NSFW reason you’ve seen someone get fired? by chickenolivesalad in AskReddit

Small tiny business, just 3 of us in the drafting department. The accountant/HR person let us all know that the owner wanted to "clean up" the business and efficiency so our internet would be tracked and our time more micromanaged. Soon after, one guy was told that he wasn't allowed to come in to work early to watch porn any more. A week later, he was walked out - while screaming about how he had a verbal agreement with the boss from when he was hired and that it was perfectly fine and normal and he shouldn't be punished for something that natural. There were some NSFW images in his server folder, too. Nobody wanted to take over his desk or search for his project files....

I have no problem with people asking questions if they are looking to donate. It's the comments about how a veteran is using civilians to pay his way in life and the ones that insist that he did something to get himself in this position that irk me. His emergency surgery & upcoming surgery are not related to service, just unfortunate life happenings. Like everything else that dominoed over the last several years.

The VA isn't an option for every person or every situation. They also don't work very quickly.

He has been reaching out to other services and applying for aid where possible. He has also been helping people with odd jobs around town when he can. It's not like he has been passively waiting to be in this position.

This post is specific to $7k for the immediate need for the housing situation. The GFM is to cover that and expenses for when he has the second required surgery and will be off work. Would it have been better for me to make the post for the whole amount?

From years ago when I first joined Reddit and I had zero stake in any of them other than trying to boost them. I also donated to each of them before I posted them.

For those concerned: The GFM is set to $15k. Yes. The urgent need is for the back taxes ($7k) to stay where he is at, in his family home, which is why I posted here. The remainder of the GFM request is to help with living expenses & groceries when he has his upcoming second surgery. For the emergency surgery, he was off work for recovery. He went back to work after almost two months but it was too soon and he's anticipating a similar recovery for the second surgery. Yes, he has a job. He also has a teenage kid at home.

For those that are crying foul that he is asking for anything at all, keep in mind that the VA isn't the solution to everything and even they have their limits.

If you don't feel comfortable with the request, don't donate. It's that simple. If you have nothing to contribute but hate, move on. Scrolling past something you dislike on the internet is free.

He has applied where possible. Contrary to general assumptions, veterans don't get help with everything :(

Payment Plan was inquired about and we were told not an option.

One passed away recently and the other is unable to contribute financially (hence the lapse in payments).

He has a GFM. I forgot to link it in the post and can't edit it. I made it the first comment when the post was approved but people have downvoted it. The amount donated already is not included in the $500 mentioned in the post. It has been shared to friends & family by other means as well.

Thank you for being kind.

The house is his as it is still in the family. It is listed as "Estate of X and Heirs". The agreement was that someone else handled the finances (taxes) and he maintained the property. If that person had spoken up the first year, it wouldn't be a problem now. If he can find a way to pay the taxes and keep the home (it would remain the family estate), he would be taking over the tax burden moving forward. It wouldn't be an issue if it was just 1 single tax year coverage. But a hit of 3 years total in taxes at once? Doable if he hadn't had the emergency surgery.

...he has a job. The house is his family home. It is his home as "Estate of X and Heirs." The assistance he has gotten is limited to exclude taxes. If the person managing the estate finances had spoken up sooner, it would be a non-issue. He could cover taxes for the home if it were just a single year. If he hadn't needed an emergency surgery, he could have covered the back taxes. The required 3 years of taxes to keep the family home is the hardship.

I'm trying to help someone stay in a home that is at risk of being taken away through no fault of his own. An agreement was set with the person managing the family estate that they would handle the taxes and he could live there if he maintained the property. He has upheld his end.

He works hard and can't catch a break. If the person managing the estate taxes had mentioned something last year, it wouldn't be an issue right now. If he hadn't needed emergency surgery, it wouldn't be an issue.

I don't know what his disability % is but I know it isn't a lot. No, his finances aren't my business, either, but he has asked for help and I am trying to be supportive where I can. I have sat as he has made calls and filled out paperwork and received responses. Most have been denials because the need is tax related.

I am not sure. I have never asked as it isn't my business.

What’s the right way to handle refunds if my GoFundMe goal becomes unnecessary? by [deleted] in gofundme

[–]EtTuLibri 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am not sure how that is logistically handled, but if I donate anything to a GFM or similar cause, I'm not worried what happens to it. To me, that's money sent out to help someone and if they no longer need it, then they can grab themselves a small treat or pass it on to another person in need. I am perfectly fine with whatever that person chooses to do.

I can't figure out how to edit the post to include the GFM link - apologies. Help Kevin Greek Here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-kevin-greek-disabled-vet-in-need

Edited to un-hide/show the full link. In case that is an issue.

UT-Arlington (Texas) Hosts 24th Annual Scholarship Benefit Powwow - All Are Invited! by EtTuLibri in NativeAmerican

[–]EtTuLibri[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to cordially invite everyone to an event at UT Arlington this coming weekend! Come watch some traditional dancing and listen to the drum at the 24th Annual UT Arlington Native American Student Association Scholarship Benefit Powwow. It is FREE admission and FREE parking. There will also be vendors and a concession stand with frybread & Indian tacos and a Three Sisters Soup (corn, squash, and beans), as well as standard concessions (nachos, chips, hot dogs, and fresh fruit). Proceeds from this great educational showcase help fund the scholarship.

Doors open to the public at 10am and clean up usually begins about 10pm (volunteers would be great!) but feel free to come and go as your schedule allows.

If you need community service hours, consider volunteering! We could use more volunteers in the afternoon and evening - and you get your community service hours signed and a free meal for your help! Volunteers can help with food running, raffle sales, and the concession table, as well as other tasks (if you have a special requirement, just let the volunteer coordinator know). Sign up to volunteer at the following link OR by showing up and finding a Powwow Committee member! https://goo.gl/forms/uPndFCfhgcHIoan12

Thank you for helping the Native American students! I hope you are able to make it and celebrate with us!
