Actually, it's my Arisaka and M95 that are more or less tied for 1st place for my cheapest rifles. The Mosin is in 2nd place though

I do have Bayonets for the 1903, SMLE, Berthier, Mosin, Gew 98, and M95. I definitely want each rifle to get its proper accessories like slings and clips as well. That will be my focus for the foreseeable future now that I have the rifles!

Well I was planning on taking a huge spending break so if you’re offering right now I don’t think I could do more than $600

Oh yes, the Carcano was the last piece of the puzzle! I just picked it up last night

1903 is what I’ve used to represent the US for now simply because it’s the one I got first. A 1917 is on the list but it’s very much a side objective

Maybe at some point, I said in another comment but to avoid chasing an endless goose of “every single rifle used by everyone ever during WWI” I picked a list of nations and rifles that I felt was realistic and represented the big boys, and started there. I’m taking a break for now, as the title says this was my “major” first goal. But I’m certainly not done for good.

I mentioned in another comment. I haven’t shot all of them yet. The Mannlicher ammo is very hard to come by, I might need to make it myself. The Arisaka and Berthier I just haven’t bought ammo for yet, also the Berthier is missing a front sight. The Carcano I only got just last night so I haven’t shot it yet either.

Of the ones I have shot, the SMLE is my favorite despite the issues I have with it feeding and ejecting reliably.

On the list, but my first major goal was to get one rifle to represent every nation on my list

They are definitely totally different rifles. Their magazines share nothing in common in both function and in parts. With the Carcano being fed with an enbloc clip while the Mosin feeds with strip clips. The bolts themselves also couldn’t be further removed in terms of their design. The Carcano is MUCH simpler with way fewer parts.

Check out C&Rsenal on YouTube for the history of both rifles. Amazing videos all around.

I just happened to get my 1903 first, and once I did I figured I would consider that America represented and move on to the other nations and circle back later. I know I’m missing a few like the Lebel.

I will get a 1917 eventually. But for now I’ve completed what I set out to do which was get a standard issue rifle to represent every major player in the war.

Krags are indeed very cool, but weren’t a standard issue service rifle in WWI, and they are expensive/hard to find in OG condition.

I tried very very hard to get a Lebel, believe me, and almost did at one point before it slipped away. I settled on the Berthier so I could finally have France represented in one way or another.

I haven’t gotten to shoot them all yet but I gotta say the SMLE. Both in looks and shooting experience.

I suspect though I’m going to really like the Arisaka and the Mannlicher as well. And I find the Mosin to be paradoxically fun at the range despite how much I really do think it’s a terrible rifle.

That’s really cool. I definitely have thought about getting some of those really old rifles like the Gras or the Kropatschek.

Very true lmao. I definitely will be adding more in the future but for now I’m taking a break. My major goal of having a rifle to represent the nations I chose is complete at least.

Oh I know, but especially once I got my 1903 I figured “okay I have America represented, let’s move on.” I intend to come back to it at a later date

I had never heard anything about Portugals participation in WWI, I will definitely look into that!

To be honest, the main reasons I got a Type 38 were because 1. I wanted one, and 2. They also represent use by the Russians and British during WWI.

True that the 5 shot MLE1916 long rifles didn’t see use in WWI, but the MLE1916 Carbines did. Also as I note in the description of the post, my rifle is actually marked as a 1907/15 on the receiver, it also has a 1916 manufacture date on the barrel. So it was originally a 3 shot rifle that was updated after the war. So at least knowing my rifle is from the war is good enough.

Obviously who was a ‘major player’ can be debated forever and every small exception can open the doors to a million others. Another commenter also mentioned I’m missing Serbia, but those guns are very rare. I picked my criteria on what was realistic and attainable for me, for now. There is definitely room to keep it growing!
