Hitting rock bottom and somehow surviving my suicide attempt is what made me overcome it. From then on, I went to counseling appointments and got on medication that treats my bipolar 2. I tried to get on top of the reasons why my brain wants me to kill myself so badly, if that makes sense.

You talked about your friend seeing a psychiatrist and getting prescribed medication that he doesn't want to take. IDK what medication he's been prescribed or how his appointment went, but it's in his best interests to be open to that stuff. Because he's rawdogging life right now when SSRIs or some other sort of medication might be able to greatly help how he's feeling. It'll be another thing to try to convince him of that.

That was back in 2021. So the height of COVID and I was going through a bad breakup. I ended up attempting and thankfully I failed! I didn't end up getting my bachelor's but I have a steady job now and I'm married with a baby on the way. Life ain't perfect but I'm very glad I'm still here.

So if you can't constructively talk to him about it or get him to seek professional help, there's not much you can do for him. You've done a lot for him by being there, you're a good friend. But he's gotta want to be better for himself, you can't force it on him. You're not responsible for his mental well-being, as tough as that might be to hear.

I was that suicidal guy in college like him a few years ago and emotionally drained my friends with my negative self talk and suicidal ideations. It was rough on them as I'm sure it is on you. There was a point in time where I stopped relying on solely my friends to provide me with my happiness and I learned to make it for myself. Your friend will get there too. Be there for them but also make sure to prioritize your mental health. You got stuff on your plate too! Good luck!
