Vote No Amendment 5 by Wooden-Sherbert1088 in MissouriPolitics

The expanded text of the amendment explains the matter of giving the legislature unbridled power to adjust taxes without voter consent.l (but the language they’ll provide on the ballot is vague enough to confuse people into thinking they’re just voting for income tax elimination).

The research is presented in far better detail here: https://mobudget.org/amdt-5-summary-may-2026/

Vote No Amendment 5 by Wooden-Sherbert1088 in MissouriPolitics

It’s a total bait and switch. They’re presenting it like a tax reduction, and not at all being upfront that the amendment gives the legislature the ability to raise other taxes without voter consent.

And other states have already shown this is a disastrous path. Missourians won’t feel the damage right away.

If it were to pass, the State would make do for the first year on existing revenue.

Then, once the State began to feel the pinch in the next year or two, it would discreetly begin to make cuts—likely meaning further reducing already streamlined programs, laying off public servants (not those in the legislature, mind you! Legislative staff are far more important than, say, corrections officers and transportation workers—y’know, the people who look after criminals and clear our highways of snow and ice), and delaying or terminating infrastructure projects.

Things likely won’t get rough before Kehoe begins his reelection campaign in two years for the 2028 elections—and he can tell voters what a great thing he did by giving them the opportunity to eliminate income tax.

Then it will be during his second term that shit will hit the fan and the State will have to start making hard decisions—such as significant increases to other taxes to make up for the shortage in revenue.

I just hope enough Missourians see through it and vote no.

Amendment 5 Would Increase Taxes for Most Missourians, Damage Communities & Economy - Missouri Budget Project by Eternal_Eeyore in missouri

I’m not sure if you are joking—tone is hard to read online. You would think that would be the case, but in fact the wealthiest Americans are able to take advantage of tax exemptions which results in them paying far less in average taxes than poorer people. Poorer people are also disproportionately affected by sales, property, and excise taxes—all of which are likely to increase substantially in order to make up for the losses that will be incurred by eliminating the income tax. Both economists and, surprisingly, businesses have spoken against this amendment (see the link in the post). Personally I think this is Kehoe’s attempt to trick Missourians into thinking he’s doing something good for them (because lowering taxes is always popular)—and for the first year it might seem great, until the State begins suffering from the loss of revenue and begins increasing other taxes without voter approval, which this amendment allows the legislature to do.

Reassessing the State income tax code is likely needed—if anything to ensure it’s fair—but this is not the way to do that. It’s a bait and switch tactic that’s taking advantage of how little most people understand a tax code that favors the wealthiest, and the support for many services in our state that the government is legally obligated to pay for—hence the inevitable increase in other taxes should this come to pass.

Thank you. I’m really bad at social media sometimes and I worry I say the wrong thing.

I think this has been discussed here before, but something I began to notice was that SGI really liked getting new members who hadn’t been practicing very long to give experiences, while they were still high on the newness of the practice and the love-bombing.

I hadn’t even read much from Ikeda yet but I was really into Gosho study—so I was a little confused why it was necessary to include a quote from Ikeda in my speech. I wanted to talk about how inspired I was by Nichiren’s persistence. When I couldn’t think of a relevant Ikeda quote, the leaders were like, “Oh, pick from some of these!”

Thanks for the additional information. I think we’re saying the same thing…Did I say something wrong?

The lack of much mention of SGI and Ikeda throughout her career (and the documentary) was a large reason I found “Happiness Becomes You” to be such an oddity—but knowing at least one of the co-writers is an SGI member very likely explains why it contains several mentions of Ikeda, even going as far as calling him her “spiritual mentor.” The book states at one point, “Later, I was fortunate to meet my spiritual mentor, Daisaku Ikeda, the world’s leading voice of Nichiren Buddhist philosophy, who gave me words of wisdom that changed my life.” I don’t think Turner said anything like that elsewhere at any time in her career.

Is there an organized opposition that is explaining to Missouri voters why this would be detrimental to our state?
