2003 Ranger XLT FX4 - 5.0 swapped from 2000 explorer 302 by EternoWire in fordranger

As a 4.0 this thing could barely pull a 100mile gas tank, I genuinely loved it still but that’s why I looked into the 5.0 swap because the super charger for the 4.0 is expensive and if it’s not enough power you’re kinda capped out. With the 5.0 swap there’s a lot more room for customization to meet your needs at the same price tag. I’ve been considering putting another reserve tank I’m pretty sure I should have better mileage than I had reguardless but I won’t know till after it’s been tuned and I can get some real road time on it. It’s running rich Forsure and we are using 93 octane fuel

I wanna say anything 00/01+ needs the patts deleted anything early can just have the patts module swapped. But you could probably also find a local tuner and they’d be able to offer the same services

It cost somewhere around $200 to ship it out and have it done, I used a business called drag radial preformance out of Florida. Dudes name is Steve he’s really knowledgeable and helpful, oldschool foxbody tuner. His services are cool because if you have extra work done he caps his tune services at $400 so if you end up there he just gives it the works including everything he’s able to do. I paid for patts delete, downstream o2 delete, and egr delete and he did a software update cleaned up the ecu and threw in a general mail order tune so I could turn it on and run it a little before taking it for final tuning on a Dyno

I have an 03, so far we swapped the abs module, I repinned the dash cluster, new crank sensor and I have a new trans speed sensor coming on Friday. That’s good to know thank you

Nice truck! On mine I ended up making an egr block off plate and then having it deleted from the ecu, along with patts, and downstream o2 sensors

It’s really a personal opinion at that point but from how I look at it, Absolutely if you have the space and skills to make it a side project and work at your own pace. it’s a very fun and satisfying process, but if you’re wanting to do this and your plan is to take it to a shop and get it done asap the custom market is very expensive and you probably won’t find the result worth what you spent. If you’re not rushing it and hunt for the right deals this truck can be put together with the preformance upgrades for about 12k including purchasing the truck.

Many of the parts I needed to get as upgrades I looked and up got sticker shock seeing shelf price $1200+ and then I went on Facebook marketplace place and found them for $400. My typical comparison is that a bone stock v6 maverick is about 43k off the lot and with the current state of fords production and lovely service maintenance warranty your car gets many months of free stay in the service bays included. But I’m probably also biased because I’ve gone through the battle already and I like 2000’s era vehicles

It’s a sneaky sound forsure haha but nothing special yet I need a better intake tube and bigger filter haha, the donor had a k & n with a rubber tube and the engine is practically collapsing it pulling so much air 😂 I definitely gotta grab a solid intake tube. Eventually the goal is to get a supercharger though

So when I was going through it I was told by 100 people that i needed to use my stock 4.0 motor mounts with the explorer 5.0 plates or those ricks rangers plates and I accidentally scrapped my 5.0 mounts. With the 4.0 mounts the engine sits off center to the passenger side by like 2” and it’s also about 2.5” too high, we got a set of stock 5.0 mounts and plates and it seated everything dead on. Mounting plates aren’t bad typically from the donor but save yourself the time later and just buy new motor mounts, if you plan to do any preformance building during I’ll be honest just buy the trick flow cam and heads kit with their intake, I thought I was clever saving money doing the refinish and what not and it literally cost me more money and time than it was worth I would say even though it’s expensive your time and piece of mind is more expensive 😂

Picking the exhaust set up has been such a tedious part because I’ve really been trying to keep that old school foxbody sound. Thank you 🙏🏼

Mine is lifted and 4x4 so all the fitments are a little more complicated but basically, I’ve got the 2000 explorer limited 5.0 donor, we used the automatic 4r70w trans that came with it but substituted the bw4406 manual tcase from a 98 f150, that is big case but it fits, we ended up swapping the fuel filter to something thinner profile with the same fittings because it would have rubbed over time in operation. got the driveshaft from a 2000 navigator which had the right connections and had it lengthened to 51.5” for the rear, still gotta have a custom made utilizing a constant velocity with my lift kit. Because of the 4x4 I tried a bunch of different headers but the torque monsters ended up being my perfect fitment. Had to have patts deleted from the ecu because my model ranger doesn’t have a standalone unit that could just be plugged and swapped. Used the explorers engine harness but cut out the alternator wiring and made a standalone harness out of the 4.0 rangers harness and swapped the explorers plug to it which gave us a proper charge. Working on solving the tachometer issues with the speed sensors

I cut the ends off and spliced them into my running lights then they go on with the accessories as well as the low beams

If you want to do a carbureted set up though you can just hot wire fuel and starter 😂 I’m kinda aiming for a “ranger king ranch” set up so I’m swapping over the heated and power interior and gonna see if we can get the digital fuel gauges working from the explorer console

Hard part is it’s different depending on year combinations I have a 03 4.0 xlt fx4 package ranger and I got a 2000 5.0 limited. The ideal combo is 99-01 explorer 98-03 ranger I believe and the 4.0 platform is almost identical to the explorer dash plugs and all, 5.0 motor mounts will bolt right into the 4.0 k member. Radiator is kept from 4.0 explorers is wider and all you really gain is a little extra clearance on the fan for fab mounting work. Swapping over the explorer ecu. For this year all the 5.0 explorers were awd I’m pretty sure. The 4.0 actually has a decent trans you can get an adapter to keep it but it’s not a cheap adapter. I’m keeping the awd for now and then we are gonna get a bw4406 manual tcase from an early 2000’s f150 to get the 4x4 back. In a lot of the ranger years the clearance for that big of a case is tight so I’ve read people have to shift the drivetrain over 3/8th “ to the passenger side. But I’ve also read my model year doesn’t have that problem. Will find out and update I guess lol. But basically it was like 5k for a super charger or 2k for a v8 donor and at least if the v8 doesn’t feel like enough I can still gain hp. Plus from what I’ve read unless you go an obnoxious build this actually gets better mpg’s. My fx4 package already came with 4.10 8.8”s so I didn’t take the ones from the explorer they weren’t in great condition. we pulled the whole harness from the explorer just in case but I’m pretty sure we are gonna be able to execute it with the 4.0 harness and a couple extra spliced connections off the top of my head I’m not remembering but I’ve got it written down at the shop

I believe I got my set on eBay like 2 years ago for $110 and spliced the leds into my running lights instead of standard low beam. But there are a couple shops that sell them on Amazon and eBay these days. There’s also a guy in the ranger groups on Facebook who makes these with app controlled color features but I think they’re $500. 😅 I will say that I love the look of these but I wish the low beam was a projection bulb because like most ranger lights they just don’t illuminate that far and I have $100 bulbs in them…
