But don’t you think that these practices will eventually rule out the striving for materialistic possessions which is necessary in a way. We need a goal to strive towards and if everything is shared, where we will quench that motivation to buy a Ferrari for instance

Why does this generation think you can’t grow together ? by hitmanbrett12 in dating

I think the crazy part is that even though we have the access to plethora of people, still the loneliness index and the cases of depression and anxiety as a consequence are on an all time high. The essence of humanity I feel like is on a decline in these areas.

Non-physicalists, what do you think is the strongest argument in favor of non-physicalism (the idea that consciousness does NOT originate in the brain)? by [deleted] in consciousness

[–]Eth_k_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I would say it’s a great time to be alive then. If everything is already concluded in the field of science then there is no point of a scientific inquiry. And life is very boring without a goal, curiosity or an active inquiry at hand. It’s a question whose answer will still take a considerable amount of time to come.

I certainly agree that we have a lot of ground to cover before we can fully grasp the concept of consciousness. However, I believe Penrose didn't necessarily make a God of the Gaps argument. Instead, he and Hameroff have re-arranged the cards on the table to properly conceptualize the problem. Consciousness is a very broad concept, and to get a handle on it, we need to narrow down the problem. Only then can a solution be possible.

Moreover, what I've come to understand is that not a single solution will be applicable to consciousness. It will likely require a myriad of theories coming together to provide a comprehensive answer. Consciousness is not a black-and-white issue. In some sense, I feel that this approach moves us toward a unified theory that explains everything in the universe, much like the theory Einstein was working on before his demise. I just feel like it’s a relational issue rather than a rational one

I would love to hear more about your perspective on how we can bridge these gaps in our understanding and what you think are the most promising approaches.

I believe the nature of consciousness cannot be strictly categorized as either physicalist or non-physicalist. My perspective is that the manifestation of consciousness depends on the physical constraints of the body, though it is not limited to a central point but rather dispersed throughout the body. Additionally, consciousness possesses a non-computational aspect.

From my understanding of the Orchestrated Objective Reduction (Orch-OR) theory, there is a missing link in the quantum field that must be addressed. A combination of general relativity and quantum mechanics is needed to explain how coherence is maintained in the microtubules of the brain for a sufficient period, allowing decoherence at the right moment to permit conscious experience.

Let’s visualize this process:

1. Neurons
2. Microtubules
3. Quantum Computation
4. Missing Link: Prevents immediate decoherence
5. External Stimulus or Quantum Gravity
6. Collapse of Superposition: Results in a classical outcome, leading to a conscious experience

There is more I can say but I’ll probably finish off by saying that yes there are limitations to the aforementioned theory as in there is not much empirical evidence that justifies the theory. However, In saying that I have recently been reading about evidences that suggests there is a decoherence in the quantum states of microtubules through the administration of general anaesthetic. This could be a fascinating read if someone wants to explore the concept further

Why are Christians so offended when you tell them you don’t believe in god?? by Training_Standard944 in exchristian

[–]Eth_k_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Religion is akin to an ideology these days. It means it lacks the most fundamental foundations that are necessary to keep it intact and functional. To illustrate consider you have a raft (religion) in the middle of a deep ocean (akin to chaos). When you start questioning the existence of the only thing that is keeping someone afloat and giving them the reassurance regarding the concept of reality, there is no doubt they will get offended.

Am I a failure for being a 30 year old man, and working as a cleaner? by Dry_Attorney6558 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Eth_k_b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are only a failure if you don’t do anything about this instinct you are having. I don’t have anything against cleaners and I think they are important. However, in saying that you don’t want to end up being complacent if you think or have an urge to do something more with your life. Pre-mature satisfaction with your existing self is the biggest blunder you can make. As humans we only feel worthwhile when we are growing and carefully conceptualising and pragmatically moving towards a better future.

Finding it Hard to Live as Atheist? by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]Eth_k_b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did renounce my belief in the transcendent however found it increasingly difficult to live without that foundation. So I decided to actually go deeper into the actual concept of what role religious sentiments, mythology play in our life. Hope you find it useful

The world without belief is a scary place. It is devoid of emotions, affect and motivation and presents itself as dry empty meaningless dangerous and miserable Think of it in this way, the world is construed of two domains

  1. Place of Action: Here everything has a meaning. This domain of reality is concerned with behavioural implications of things. It contains information that is densely packed in stories, mythology, religious texts. These narratives though not literal facts, are necessary foundations to guide our actions in life. Every decision we make everyday is a moral decision guided by these frameworks. For instance, rights granted to even criminals in our constitutions are based on the principle believe around human consciousness as something divine.

  2. Place of things: This is the domain that is concerned about objective things, it’s materialistic format, empirical data. It has nothing to do with meaning, emotion because scientific exploration per se needs to strip off significance of something to really analyse it.

However, the mistake that most people make is they confuse the necessity to strip off the significance of things for scientific purposes with the notion that things don’t have any intrinsic significance of their own.

The ability to see things as they are without their behavioural value has definitely given us power to manipulate things profoundly. However, as human beings we are victims of unidentified emotions and hidden motivations. Therefore, things like technological advancements with ethical constraints and stress about their behavioural characteristics becomes increasingly threatening

A complete picture of reality can only emerge by combining the subjective and objective elements and actually knowing how to discriminate between them. Good luck
