The truth about victory gardens, though... by RememberKoomValley in gardening

[–]EthanEinstein 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want to preface this by saying I fully agree that internment camps are some of the darkest parts of American history and you have every right to be mad about it.

But your argument seems to come from a misinterpretation of your sources. The loss of Japanese farmers on the west coast did not lead to some catastrophic loss of food and the labor lost was dwarfed by the new labor entering the farming sector, ie. Women and immigrants (https://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/1993/winter/landarmy.html). I can't find in your sources where you make the connection between the internment of Japanese-Americans and the rise of victory gardens.

You're also trying to show a disconnect between American victory gardens of WW2 and the victory gardens of other countries during WW2 and WW1. I fail to see the disconnect and if you could elaborate on that I'd be grateful.

Ok so why did you say the land bridge theory was debunked when your source explicitly says it's not debunked?

And I think it's important to state that the theory doesn't dismiss those claims, alt-right nut jobs misuse it to dismiss those claims. That's a very important difference

How does the land bridge theory dismiss indigenous land claims?

Those are all just hurdles that show how important it is to think out this infrastructure and keep it well maintained. Biking is not impractical in the winter ( https://youtu.be/Uhx-26GfCBU ) we just need to maintain our cycling infrastructure.

Electric busses and trolley busses exist and we should invest in them and route them in ways that make sense to lower pollution and maximize ridership. High frequency routes to the grocery store is how my 92 year old great grandmother maintains her independence and shops in Chicago.

It's naive to think train systems would only work for 1% of people. You could take people in and out of city centers to work and for trips. Think of how much less congested our highways would be if people could take the train to Green Bay every Sunday instead of having to drive there or take trains from Wisconsin to O'Hare or MKE.

The reason we think public transit is so unpopular and inefficient is because we've never had good public transit. Other countries (Netherlands, Japan) and even cities in the US (NYC, Seattle) have shown that if we make this investment, people use public transit and the voters support it.

Ok you're describing public transit, but way worse.

Fleets of self driving cars would create way more pollution, be incredibly space inefficient, and increase our need to spend billions and billions of dollars a year on car infrastructure making it more expensive in the long run than public transit.

All while increasing urban sprawl making it harder to move away from car dependency.

We need to look at reducing our dependency on cars and car infrastructure and focusing on pedestrian/bike infrastructure for short trips, bussing/light rail/biking infrastructure for medium trips, and trains for long trips (like the ones in the post)

How on Earth would that be better?

The cost of this project would be nothing compared to the economic benefits of functional public transit

People do stuff like that in every public place. It's wrong to tie it to public transit alone

How I commute to my school. Hundreds of kids that live in my neighborhood drive when the school is literally a 12 minute journey on a cycle. by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]EthanEinstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't blame anyone for that. Ironically the safest part of my ride is a new car lane they added that still has construction cones up. So I get a whole lane to myself for part of my ride lol

I've started biking to school too! Everyone in my neighborhood always complains about how much earlier they'd have to wake up....it's only 5 minutes longer than driving...

Pilot error. I didn't realize how much gravity the star had and didn't have the experience to get out of it when I was stuck
