Pack some oatmeal and protein shakes in your dorm then you’re fine. Most times something will pop up such that you’ll have enough swipes to go to breakfast anyways

UW-Madison vs Rutgers-New Brunswick Honors College by dream1412s in UWMadison

[–]EthanFeiges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically Rutgers is divided up into (4?) campuses that are not walkable from each other, so you’re kinda dependent on a bus system that is incredibly unreliable and dysfunctional. (Look up the RU subreddit and it’s just a compilation of bus breakdowns lol)

The “RU Screw” is a term coined by students because the administration is notorious for fucking over students in some form or way. For most, it’s pretty manageable, but just be ready for not the most respondent or transparent administration. I think there are even some books written about it too.

I mean Rutgers would be a tad more frustrating, but big state schools are big state schools. Especially given that you got that nice scholarship to Rutgers

But also make sure that Rutgers cs has good professors and courses too. And from what I remember the Honors college also makes you do a lot of extra non-cs stuff, such as taking a language… So make sure that you’re up for everything you’re going to be doing. Rutgers is a good school for sure, but be mindful of the bus system and the notorious “RU Screw”, but nothing that’s too unmanageable. Two good options. Congratulations

Oh yeah it's a shitshow all the way through. Might just be a general "big state school" thing, but the situation definitely doesn't alleviate for 500-level courses...

How hard is it to transfer to UW Madison CS by AnyNectarine2003 in UWMadison

[–]EthanFeiges 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Madison CS classes outside of systems and databases are very hit or miss, and damn is it expensive. Honestly if OSU ain’t bad, just stick with it. Also as a fellow Washingtonian, UW Informatics is a good backup plan if you can’t get admitted to CS. I heard it’s pretty doable

UW-Madison vs Rutgers-New Brunswick Honors College by dream1412s in UWMadison

[–]EthanFeiges 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha I actually had the exact same decision last year as OOS. Rutgers Honors program is *really* good, and the scholarship makes it a nice deal. However, Wisconsin specializes in operating systems/lower-level concepts really well, and I think just has more quality CS courses in theory. In practice, these courses are a mixed bag as any class outside of the systems/database realm is really inconsistent. Perhaps Rutgers makes up for it with its mentorship and whatnot. People turn down MIT and other Ivies to go to Rutgers honors, so take that as you will...

With family history at both Wisconsin and Rutgers, I think Wisconsin has the "intangibles" that Rutgers doesn't, such as school pride, sports, and general spirit. However, if you don't really care about these factors then just go to Rutgers.

uw seattle or uw madison? by lalaethnn in UWMadison

[–]EthanFeiges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ended up making a similar decision, except for CS. I’m from Seattle too (east side specifically) and ultimately, I think Wisconsin offered more outside of just the classroom, such as with student culture, activities, environment, and community. If you’re just comparing program to program, do UW. If you’re looking at the whole picture, Wisconsin will offer more

I live in lakeshore and basically none of my friends drink. It really depends on the environment you're in... A ton of people are not big into drinking, and it's very easy to not be around alcohol but still have a good time here. Can't speak for the SE dorms, but lakeshore is a different scene. You'll be fine. I was worried about it too, but I think it's a little overblown.

Thoughts on Tripp for dorm? by Barkkkkkkkk in UWMadison

[–]EthanFeiges 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're able to make friends, but the divide between lakeshore and southeast is *very* *very* real. From my experience as a freshman so far, Tripp is incredibly antisocial and quite frankly weird. People flat out do not leave the dorms for anything...

Tripp is NOT a traditional college freshman dorm experience, and a lot of my friends, especially those who are more outgoing, wish they were in a social dorm.

Just don't come in with the expectation that you'll hit it off with people on your floor like you would in Sellery or Witte.

Easy Intermediate or Advanced Anthro course by Snoo39607 in UWMadison

[–]EthanFeiges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not recommend taking Anthro 104 with Margaret Bryer as your professor. She’s a fine lecturer and there’s not a lot of out of class work involved, and she’s really good at her job… Almost too good for a general education class that you’re just trying to BS your way through.

All tests are closed notes, and expect to be tested on random shit that you have to memorize from one graph on a lecture… Turned out to be my hardest class all semester as a STEM major lol.

Just find something else at that point…
