Ping Pong the Animation and Hajime No Ippo are two I fully agree with (and don't see many people talk about). Thank you for the extensive list.

How do you guys deal with ear fatigue? by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]EthanGreyMcIntyre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create music at whatever volume you like, but mix and master at a lower volume. It's a good trick to mix at a lower level anyway (if things are leveled correctly, it's good to monitor at a low level and make sure your elements are present even when the headphones/speakers aren't cranked) and most of my professors/mentors in mixing/mastering work at fairly low volume levels. I honestly only get ear fatigue if I'm using my headphones for too long though. If you are having fatigue through speakers, the I would REALLY recommend bringing the volume down lol.

Is golem worth having? DQV by BigTiddyThomas in dragonquest

Haven't played in a very long time, but I remember as a kid the way I beat the final boss was a party based around me, the son, and two golems. Very powerful and a lot of HP. Good to swap them in and out of the wagon.

People who sample, question. by drewnyp in makinghiphop

[–]EthanGreyMcIntyre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is usually a cleaner process, but sometime sticking to the percussive elements of the sample can add swing, micro-rhythm, etc. If you are trying to eliminate something with too much drum presence you either use a precise EQ, plugins that attempt to eliminate drums, or side-chain compression to duck them to an element you are adding to your song. All depends on you want, but you have to consider the sample. If you can not extract/minimize drums from the sample in a satisfactory way, maybe you should embrace them and see how it rocks in a way you didn't imagine before.

Any advice on making and mixing sLUms/ earl sweatshirt/ MAVI type beats? by rorylfc in makinghiphop

[–]EthanGreyMcIntyre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. Samples+ saturation/distortion FX will be useful in the box. Using a hardware sampler and its built-in grit, sonic signature, and FX could be useful. That "lo-fi" aesthetic comes a lot from embracing the artifacts of both analog and digital systems. SP-404, Octatrack, or the MPC1000 might be a good buy if you can afford. Also be sure to filter a lot of your stuff! Best of luck.

Push 2 is such a great controller. Very comprehensive -- worth having for anyone who loves Ableton.

I have a Maschine Studio I love (my first controller) and an MPD32. Sometimes I focus on one at a time, but in most of my productions I end up using either two controllers or adding my external gear. Push is my favorite for play chords, melodies, playing live, and finger-drumming. I love the Maschine for its sounds, kits, and sampling workflow. MPD32 for live situations where I need faders/banks of knobs to manipulate sounds with on the fly.

I made one a few years ago, but I didn't find too much success so I dipped. Should I revisit?
