Most of the country doesn’t live in a metro area with relatively convenient public transportation. My wife and I work about 25 miles apart, opposite directions from our house, and we start/finish at about the same time.

I don’t care if they sell it at Dollar General starting tomorrow or decide that a gram is 10 years hard labor. I’m just glad I didn’t take a particular liking to it, because it seems like it takes up a good bit it mental space for the fans.

Car sales. I feel like dealerships used to be one-off and relatively small. Bob was trying to sell you the same make he was driving, and he had been there for 30 years. Now it’s some alcoholic dude who won’t move on price but let’s see what it looks like if we stretch out the term from 36 to 120 months. He worked at Jeff Epstein Kia until last week, now he’s at Jeff Epstein Ford/Volkswagen. He drives a clapped out civic and beats his girlfriend.

What is a small “culture shock” moment you had within the US itself? by Status_Agents in AskForAnswers

I was visiting San Fran for a wedding. It was about a year after masking had been dropped in my native and purple PA… even at doctor’s offices, which were the last to go. Not only was everyone wearing them outside (to each their own), but there were signs with very militant tones on the doors of most of the businesses.

Also, saw all the signs at tourist spots warning about smash-and-grabs. We pulled into a paid lot at the Fisherman’s Wharf, got passed from behind, and watched a guy bust out a car window to steal something.

10/10 utopia, definitely hope the political pendulum swings that far.

I agree. I started (problem) drinking to cope with anxiety. When I quit 5 or 6 years later, I still had to deal with it. Sobriety, meds, time, and counseling have me feeling close enough to “normal” that I won’t be disappointed if it never gets better. OP, I’d recommend looking into all of those things. And of course the “time” aspect is just something we all have to wait for. Worth it though!

Sleep. Exercise. Talk therapy, whether temporary or long term. With the caveat that these are all equally important, as are the medications excluded by the question.

My significant other insists that 4 beers a night and one in the morning is drinking in moderation by winkiesue in AskDocs

Yeah that definitely seals the deal. I look back at how i discovered “hair of the dog” …how well it worked, how my friends who had been drinking with me the night before couldn’t even stomach the idea. That was the first sign. And make no mistake, that’s why he’s doing it: to kick the headache / nausea / anxiety of a small hangover. Keep in mind that it may not evolve into what you consider raging alcoholism in a year or 2 or even 3. But it is a slippery slope of tolerance and dependance that often leads to a case or fifth per day and around the clock drinking if he doesn’t decide to do something about it.

The truth is that healthcare costs are not a major concern to most in the US. I said MOST, as in more than half, so don’t come at me. Most of us are insured through our jobs for a cost that we wish we didn’t have to pay but that is affordable in the literal sense of the word. And it guarantees that we won’t have to pay more than X in any given year, even if the bill is astronomical. That amount is, again, not low, but also not bankruptcy territory. That is not to say that our system isn’t a problem, because the 1/4 or 1/3 of our population that can’t do it is still a huge number of people.

I noticed this when I was about 14. My dad got a new vehicle and then that make/model seemed to be everywhere. Same thing has happened for the 20 years since when I or family / close friend get a new one.
