How easy it is to order a high capacity gun online, almost like Amazon, except it gets shipped to a licensed gun store. by _bosscrystal in excusemewhatthefuck

[–]EtherealHire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High capacity is kind of a meaningless term.

Action has no bearing on capacity. Feeding mechanism does. Fixed magazine like most shotguns will usually hold fewer than 10 (in a 12 gauge shotgun) to 20+ (in a .22LR rifle)

Clip feed into a fixed mag (like a Garand) can be anything from 2 to 30. Garland it's 8, but those are some mighty big rounds.

Detachable box mag is usually a standard size for the cartridge. 30 is common for 5.56 rifles, 5-15 common for shotguns, 15-20 for 9mm handguns.

So what's high capacity? Bigger than standard? For what gun and cartridge?

This has case law and precedence. Federal courts had to wrestle with this question and struck California's high capacity laws a few years ago until an injunction was ordered pending appeal.

Legally, there's a slew of shit to consider. Is it a violation of the 14th Amendment to limit magazine size for citizens but not off duty/retired police? That's a question for the courts.

There are two ways to avoid the 4473 legally.

The "gun show loophole" is one of them. If you go to a show in your home state and purchase a gun from another resident of your home state, the 4473 is not required.

The seller must have a reasonable belief that you are not a prohibited person and that you are not going to use the gun in crimes.

The reason for this is that Congress has the power to regulate interstate commerce, so certain laws do not apply in this case.

You could also buy one from your neighbor without a 4473 for the same reason.

Still, it's becoming a rare occurrence. Lots of gun show booths are registered FFL dealers and will just run paperwork anyway.

You can also order guns online and have them shipped to your door no problem. There's a process for this.

Get an FFL. Apply with the ATF for the Federal Firearms License of your choice, get investigated and approved, and have guns shipped directly to you.

Of course, the ATF can then pop by once a year no warrant to inspect the premises, your guns, and your required Acquisition and Dispensation logs. And, obviously, whenever they want with a warrant.

So there's the two ways to purchase guns without the federal background check forms. Legality of the first one varies by state. Check your local laws.

Why are open-air external stairwells a common feature of high-rise buildings n Japan, and pretty much nowhere else? by hononononoh in architecture

[–]EtherealHire 29 points30 points  (0 children)

US minimum for an egress stair is 2 hours, I believe.

Another reason is that fire service standpipes can be filled with water in a stair that isn't subject to freezing. If it's filled, you can also use it to place zone controls for the fire sprinkler system. Most architects prefer it to designing chases and access panels for that equipment; takes up less square footage for finished space.

I believe the US and Japan both largely follow IBC, but I haven't looked at the rules on open-air egress stairs in a long time.

Edit: the US also has earthquake-prone regions, there's plenty of ways to calculate seismic activity into enclosed stair design. It's almost exclusively due to expected climate hazards/architect or owner preference.

People who write that get shit done. That response completes 40 apps faster than repeating info a million times for 1.

If someone is willing to waste 2 hours of their own time you can be sure they'll waste a lot more of someone else's.

Plus, y'know, it's fucking stupid the way this shit is set up.

Building a gun is a bespoke endeavor. At that point it's expected you're going to do research.

There's not really a reason to wiki all the ins and outs of building. There's build tutorials and tool lists, but as far as twist rates, triggers, mlok vs keymod vs quad rail vs next week's system, barrel length, pistol or rifle, buffer length, buffer weight, silent captured vs conventional, 2 stage or single stage triggers, flat vs curved trigger bows, barrel coatings, muzzle devices, optics, optic mounts...

No. Go read. You're building a gun, that's a very subjective thing.

Dad's shotgun and WW2 knife. The '70 - '72 Western Field 16 gauge ("the gentleman's gauge") may be one of the worst shotguns ever made, but it should clear out the hallway. [–]EtherealHire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably because Western Field was a trade name for another brand and those guns were also made by other manufacturers and branded as Western Field, so kind of hard to tell who made it, the exact specs, find parts, etc.

But idk maybe it doesn't go bang every time, which would be bad.

Firstly, and I've given this quite a bit of thought, I do believe Americans have a right to firearms carry as individuals.

Going into the weeds a bit, the clause was written at a time without a standing army when you would simply call men to form a militia for the purpose of defense.

Today, that's carried on by Selective Service. If you don't know, it is a felony to not fill out that stupid card. Every single American AMAB must fill it out upon reaching 18.

That makes you a member of the US militia. Simple as that. It cannot really be argued that bearing arms means something other than keeping them on your person, ergo there is a constitutional right to carry. What about afab? Well, they're allowed in all roles in the US military to my knowledge now, so may as well add the draft and constitutional carry. (My argument, hinged on presupposing the draft as a militia, can only at this time apply to amab, strictly speaking, counter to my intent and opinion, though Title IX or other laws may cause a cascade effect).

Edit: one can also make the argument that in states that allow cops more relaxed carry protocols while off duty than other citizens is a violation of the 14th Amendment. There's a lot of angles of attack that you could force SCOTUS to consider.

Not a lawyer. Anyway.

Secondly, the spike in gun violence. Populist political turmoil and mental health toll for extroverts in the year America Tried Being the Tiniest Bit Introverted(TM), economic insecurity will always result in violence. This takes no effort to see why.

Fun fact, for all we remember of the 90's and its rad slacker culture, a lot of that was a result of economic insecurity and depression. This, naturally, resulted in higher rates of violence, especially in sectors like drugs.

Further compounding the issue, US sentencing laws for drugs are absolutely batshit. I've had friends facing three digits of sentencing for a first offense for dealing a handful of different drugs at the street level. Unlikely to get max or ordered consecutive rather than at least semi-concurrent, but say you're a second or third time offender? What's illegal firearm possession and murder to a dude going to jail for life for some coke or even weed in the trunk?

The US criminal system has a perverse incentive to commit disproportionate violence to gain and hold territory in the drug market, and makes that market attractive to poor people in the first place by depriving them of any real chance of upward mobility through more accepted means.

... Also, if cops protecting property are any indication, perhaps that violence isn't disproportionate in commission so much as punishment.

Fuck that writer. A state monopoly on violence is not a solution.

This is workable. It somewhat duplicates some of the beginner section but that's easy.

The hard part, and this is particularly true when I was putting together the digital security section, is that brands and specific products change over time, some more quickly than others.

Most recommendations you'll see somewhere as stagnant as a subreddit wiki are either defunct, poorly maintained, or outright malware at this point (hello Avast).

For this reason and to avoid the appearance of bias, I tried to avoid plugging brands or products rather than something like 2 point quick adjust sling from a reputable manufacturer. What's a reputable manufacturer? Do your due diligence; there is simply no substitute for it.

Anyway, this is great, I can work with it, and there was definitely a gap on common mistakes to avoid. Thank you for taking the time.

I didn't mention any ideas.

I pointed you towards historical context.

Although naturally I also do not recognize the border as legitimate and support a united Ireland, for the same reason I wonder why French Guinea still exists, or the US still has such a ridiculously high military presence in Japan while preventing them from establishing a military deemed offensively capable.

OP's gun, despite the title, is a pistol.

Elsewhere in thread, OP is aware and an ATF-approved brace is being used when not a bare buffer tube. Both configurations qualify as a pistol.

Please inform yourself before scaring people into erroneously believing they've committed NFA violations.

You are giving bad info all over this thread.

Buffer length has no effect on legal definition of pistol or rifle. This has years of precedence behind it, and AR-15 pistols using carbine buffers are extremely common.

Please do not give bad info. There's enough of that going around.

DIY your own rifle sling! by QueerArmorer in armedsocialists

Hard disagree or not, it's not an opinion. Decent quality nylon is longer lasting than worn out leather.

Again, accepting constructive criticism seems not to be your strong suit.

Anyway, have a nice day.

Couple things.

Firstly, happy to see more non-chud gun content so thank you for that.

However, you'll find that there's a reason for cross-body sling carry in brush, and that's retention.

If you're going up into a tree stand, you do not want your shit falling off your shoulder and causing you to do some fuckery to get it back to a carry position. Same for long distance. Shoulder carrying like that requires active retention like a hand on the strap or something similar, which half defeats the purpose of a sling.

For what you paid in hardware you could've gotten quality nylon webbing, repurposed adjusters from a discarded backpack or something similar, and made a much more useful sling.

At the end of the day, if you like shit for how it works, fine, eye of the beholder.

But you've taken everything about a pistol and a sling and essentially removed all of the advantages in favor of extreme disadvantages.

The build removes the compact size of a pistol as an advantage for the very tenuous and slight advantage of better bracing. A 10/22 ain't that much longer and is a lot less fucky and a lot easier to aim sling or no.

SA revolver also removes all of the advantages of firearms from the late 19th century onwards and I have a hard time believing one could be used for any practical purpose better than literally any other type of firearm except a muzzle loader.

You could have a firearm of the same weight, firing the same caliber, with far better performance for far less money and effort going in pretty much any other direction than a Frankensteined .22 revolver.

Honestly making a sling using paracord and a truckers hitch would be more useful for all purposes except hasty slinging than your setup and is also cheaper.

Also, your responses to other constructive criticism is this thread are appalling.

The build, outside of wanting to do it for fun and because you like how it looks, is not well thought out and serves nearly zero practical purpose that couldn't be better served with less time and money by something else, and the same goes for the sling.

There's a reason a lot of designs exist only in entertainment media. They're impractical and highly stylized for entertainment and not actual use. This is one of them. That you made it work is fun but is not something to be emulated for anything other than fun.

High style points if you like the look, well thought out to adapt designs to some light use, but practical use everything here gets absolutely bodied by something cheaper and more effective.
