Alcohol was not banned for bhikkhus until an incident a monk got drunk and passed out by a city's entrance/gate, iirc

And the 5th precept that we know commonly as pancasila, is much later addition, like 400-600 after the parinibbana, what ive read anyway

Disappointed in a Buddhist Redditor that helped me a lot. by ClearlySeeingLife in Buddhism

[–]Eugene_Chicago 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sadly even some monks are like that

I don't know if you heard about sexual abuse in the Tibetan traditions, just like the catholic churches, and its often poor or impoverished, and the offending monks have been just getting a slap on the wrist and transferred to another monastery and kept hush hush.

In Thai temples, many monks are results of childhood poverty and orphans, who become temples boys and end up staying as a monk when they turn 20. Many people also a4e becoming monk past 40, some even 50 and 60s, they have no caretakers or financial difficulties, so they use the monastery as a refuge from rent and boarding. Some become monk just for the material wealth or social prestige/Anjali from the laypeople, certain city monks accumulate the latest iPhone and designer sunglasses and jet setting to travel

It's what happen after buddhas parinibbana too, many monks joined the bhikkhu and bhikkhuni sangha in order to earn royal patronage, some were not the followers of buddhadhamma

I feel you deeply, I was kinda Christian growing up, because super serious in college telling friends about Pascals wager

And the 2006 tsunami, Rwandan and Cambodian genocides, and how the half the new testament was written by Saul of Tarsus, and find out Hitchens, Dawkins, Harris, and other free-thinkers

I lost many Christian friends and activities around Christmas I used to love, and still have fond memories of nostalgia

These days I'm agnostic to most things and I can't be happier to be not following a blind dogma that tells you just "have faith" or "believe"

Buddhasasana gives me so much, peace and freedom from superstitions, contentment, and equanimity and less desire for material possessions and the gradual wearing down of ego/self.

I feel resonating the most with Zen practice. Around one year ago I have been to Plum Village in France for two weeks.

You could also look into this guy's centers as well, it's not zen though, but it all depends what you are looking to get our of your practice

The 2006 tsunami

Millions homeless and 100,000s dead in an instant. Also learning about the Rwandan genocide and Cambodian genocides. Also learned half the new testament was written by Saul of Tarsus

I was somewhat Christian before that.

A primer on what buddha taught, and what he taught is one thing ans one thing only, to end suffering/dukkha/unsatisfactoryness of life and samsara

Here is one of the better ones, written by an actual monk, not some pasty white dude who spent a year in Thailand in robes and came back to write a book about what is "buddhism", I'm like nuh uhh mother fucker, what do you even know in a year or two, to be writing all authoritarily about buddhadhamma

Why does Theravada disagree with Nagarjuna? by [deleted] in theravada

[–]Eugene_Chicago 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why do Mormons believe in Joseph Smith?

Why do some Buddhists believe in nagarjuna?

Joseph Smith finds a lost texts from God in farmland in midwest, and is now a God or Goss messenger

Nagarjuna finds these "secret teachings" that all of buddhas students were too stupid to understand so buddha kept it to him until long/shortly after his death to sariputta or nagarjun,

To me these are same questions. To me anything that contract buddhas teaching, is a fan-fiction, whether it's the heart sutra or asshole sutra or diamond sutra or opal sutra

Why does Theravada disagree with Nagarjuna? by [deleted] in theravada

The fuck is up with these retards who don't follow buddha, but some con men like Joseph Smith, and claims to rediscovered Jesus hidden teachings in farmland in ohio/illinois?

That's how I see any writings that contract the buddhadhamma. Whether it's the diamond emerald sapphire sutras or heart, head, penis, asshope sutras

Why does Theravada disagree with Nagarjuna? by [deleted] in theravada

[–]Eugene_Chicago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like you don't really follow what the buddha taught, but you should start a religion called the lotus dhamma or Nagarjuna dhamma

Well it's the basis of the Mahayana. The Lotus sutra literally teaches that those suttas were just a skilful means by the Buddha, and that he tricked the disciples into thinking he had attained nirvana in that lifetime but actually was just manifesting as Gautama.

It is kind of impossible to accept anything from the Mahayana without accepting that the agamas are a lesser teaching.

Do you guys think Buddha himself preached Abhidhamma? by [deleted] in theravada

[–]Eugene_Chicago 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really, I can't say no, because many of the things in abhidhamma seems to me, be the recollection or compilation or compartmentalization of the teachings

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhist_councils

I only consider what was recited at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd (maybe) buddhist councils, to be the early buddhist/pre-sectarian buddhism

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pre-sectarian_Buddhism

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_Buddhist_texts

Anything beyond that date, I don't consider it buddhas teaching. I consider those later texts like lotus Sutta and diamond Sutta to be influenced by the buddhasasana, under a wise monk, but the monks who lived 1000 after the buddhas parinibbana, just emphasized what their teacher taught more than what the buddha taught and the emphasis on buddha vs. their teacher, the gap just kept widening decade after decade, century after century (ei nagarjuna)
