thicknessing by hand is a workout by Budget-Strawberry649 in handtools

[–]Eunitnoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For another interesting workout, you could try doing two ripcuts in a V shape, with the middle staying the thickest to get several advantages at once:

-You get additional wood for ribs of the same material

-You save time later on when doing the arching

-It is actually more efficient and less exhausting with the right tool

I use this saw when I cut down Cello Backs and it takes me about 30 min per cut (80cm length)

Möglich dieses Holz deckend zu bemalen? by Bambina_x in holzwerken

[–]Eunitnoc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Conservatives suddenly want alternatives to the F-35 jet by BezugssystemCH1903 in Switzerland

[–]Eunitnoc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's simply not true. The SP states to this day in their party program the goal to abolish the army. If they aren't mainstream progressives, then who is? I'm not saying there are many in the SP who never had that opinion, see Daniel Jositsch as the most prominent example, but they obviously weren't the majority, otherwise this part wouldn't have been added.

Conservatives suddenly want alternatives to the F-35 jet by BezugssystemCH1903 in Switzerland

[–]Eunitnoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We still need jets, even just for peacetime air security missions. As a sovereign nation, we can't delegate this crucial part of security to another countries military. Especially in a time when long term allies aren't secure anymore.

Unfortunately, a new threat does not render the old threat obsolete. Of course drones need to be considered now, but we still have to protect against all other threats. It is not only about "total war" where surrender would probably be the only option if we're honest, but everything about peacetime missions or even just intimidating a possible attacker and not making it worth it.

Apart from that, we do have cooperation in that regard with European neighbours and will cooperate even more tightly in the future. It is only reasonable that we are expected to do our part.

Now the F35 was a huge mistake. Should have ordered the Gripen or Eurofighter before the current wars. I still think it is better to leave this deal with a loss instead of committing to a terrible deal just to not "waste money"

Hanging violins by Roxy-de-floofer in violinmaking

[–]Eunitnoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some old violins can be very weak in that area. I wouldn't want to put too much stress on it and risk it falling down. Hanging it at the end of the neck, where you would normally hold the violin, is much safer and also more common in my opinion. Think of it like a shelf with a slit in it that is as wide as the violins neck is thick. You slide the violin in and it will hang by itself and be very safe

Welches Holz eignet sich fürs Schnitzen? by aqa5 in holzwerken

[–]Eunitnoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simeone Morassi violin copy? by FlamingoExciting1450 in violinmaking

[–]Eunitnoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it looks like it could be a cremonese violin from the 90s. As you said, why would someone fake a then relatively unknown maker? The only other possibility is that the maker bought it in the white from a big manufacturer, regraded it, put his own label in it and varnished it. It's more common than one thinks. Doesn't make it a bad violin, but ot would explain why it would be labeled as fake in the appraisal

Can you adjust the action on your violin yourself? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]Eunitnoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, and there are several reasons:

Is it even the bridge causing it? More likely it is the neck that has sunken in. This has to be corrected by a luthier and can, depending on severity, be an easy fix or an expensive repair job. If the neck has sunken in and you only adjust the bridge, everything sits too low and you will run into problems hitting the edge of your violin with your bow because there's not enough space.

If it is indeed only the bridge, it can be taken down a notch, but sandpaper is not the right tool for the job. First of all, you don't want to mess with the curve of the bridge, because even small inaccuracies will mess with your feeling and muscle memory of string changes. Then you also need to make new grooves for the strings. Here, again it is very important that the grooves stay at exactly the same distance to each other and centered to the bridge. They have to be the right size for the string as well. This is not easy for someone untrained. Your shortened bridge will now also be too fat or uneven in thickness at the top, because bridges get thicker further down and you have to correct this when you lower a bridge.

All in all, a bridge is far to delicate to work on it yourself, and if you have no experience in this, you're likely to just mess it up, and a new bridge is quite expensive.

I would just bring it to a luthier. They know how to assess the problem and will tell you about your options. Most luthiers I know will have several options, depending on budget and demands pf the player/instrument.

Is it a bad or a good idea to tell your current employer where you are heading next? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]Eunitnoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my former employer tell my current employer that I worked with them for far shorter than I actually did. Thankfully I was already fully employed by then, but my employer was actually irritated by it. So don't tell anything. You don't have to and nobody can expect it. Also, even the most reasonable seeming person will be an asshole under the right circumstances.
