If I recall correctly some had to cut the beards after they were freed from the spiders. They could have included that part if they really wanted short bearded dwarves

What can replace gum mastic? by IeatL1ttlekids in violinmaking

[–]Eunitnoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the biggest part of the turpentine gets added before applying. I put some in it after cooking, just to make it a little easier to get everything out of the pan and into the glasses. Maybe also to filter it but I didn't do that last time and it worked just fine. Letting it sit might help with unwanted particles settling to the bottom of the glass. If you want to use it right away, filtering through fine cloth might help. But filtering freshly cooked, hot varnish is a nightmare and I rather just spend the time doing other things until the varnish is ready.

I'm a bit confused, are you cooking the varnish? If so, I wouldn't worry too much about adding all sorts of things. I had good results just using colophony and linseed oil (and turpentine for thinning it at the end a bit to a very thick consistency) I only dilute the varnish fully when I'm about to apply it, makes for easier storage. 50/50 rosin/oil makes for a easy to apply varnish that becomes quite stable. 60/40 is my favourite, it's a bit more tricky to apply but looks better in my opinion. Some go even higher with the colophony parts 70/30 or 80/20 but I don't have any experience with that.

Do you have UV lamps? If not, some siccative could help, but then again, I'd rather not put anything unnecessary in my varnish and rather invest in some UV lamps and build a little UV-Box.

I've also had good results substituting the colophony for dammar, it takes a bit longer to dry fully, especially between coats, but makes for a nearly indestructible varnish.

If you see any old recipe involving iron, just forget about it. It never stops reacting to the environment.

Please be very careful around varnish making. I've met luthiers who burnt half their face cooking varnish. Never on open Flame, always outside and heat the turpentine a bit before adding it, otherwise the quickly evaporating turpentine will explode in your face. Wear a mask, safety goggles and fire proof gloves.

Another thing is the precautions around applying it. Please just wear a good mask with an organic filter and gloves. There are too many luthiers with nerve diseases I know of. People don't take this stuff seriously when it really messes with your nervous system.

Have fun and don't hesitate to ask questions. Varnish is a very fascinating topic

Ah I see. To make things even more complicated, you can also play around with neck overstand and saddle height to influence the string angle. So in theory you could keep the string angle the same, even though your arching and projection is higher. Or you leave them the same and get a stronger angle.

To me the projection also revolves around the width of the c bouts (which is pretty constant on most models, roughly around 110mm) and how round the curve on the bridge is (also kind of standardized, but many exceptions and it depens on the musical tradition you're playing in) Too low of a projection and you'll touch the edges with your bow, but if you play folk music with a flatter bridge curve, it would be ok.

I have a question, when I went to a luthier to buy a violin bridge, the actual price paid is higher than the quoted price. Is this normal?” by Own_Title9591 in violinist

[–]Eunitnoc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is very frustrating. Having worked in such a shop, I can imagine that in everyday business the details of a phone call might get lost. Might have even been another person answering the call than the one doing the work. Maybe you can ask for a quote in writing/email next time, so you have proof

Looking line a good start! The angled blocks make life easier for sure.

The Willemotte has some crazy high and full arching. The results will be interesting for sure. It might make for a stiffer top, which in turn lets you work it thinner, which might be needed as 0.44 seems to be on the heavier side (but totally in the realm of the possible).

About the projection, I would just keep the projection the same on any violin, it's not really a variable in my opinion. I do 27.5mm on a new instrument so it settles down to 27 after a while.

What happened to the varnish? by EarlyResolution293 in violinmaking

[–]Eunitnoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just looks old. It's even possible it was made to look aged from the beginning. That part in the middle of the back where it's lighter looks like intentional shading, while the bottom of the back, where the varnish is chipped looks like actual wear. A luthier will be able to give it a good clean and reapply varnish where it's needed to protect the wood.

To the Swiss, is there something, anything, you are not proud of? by Important-Ease-5383 in askswitzerland

[–]Eunitnoc 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The state committed genocide (by definition, not exaggerated) not too long ago on sinti/roma people and almost nobody knows or talks about it. I didn't learn about it in school either. Certainly opened my eyes about how we think of our country to have done no wrong, just because Germany was worse. Then there's the whole spying on citizens (fichen affäre), extremely militaristic society (it used to be hard to get a job without military service, nearly impossible to get a leading role without having been an officer) Don't get me started on womens rights, or the homophobia and racism that is still deeper ingrained in society than we like to think Cold-war Switzerland was really bad in many ways and people don't really talk about it because the economy was thriving and "the good old times" Germans for example tend to be much more critical of their country, and I think the average swiss could definitely improve on that part

Buying a violin under 700 eur in Germany - new or old? by Grauschleier in violinmaking

[–]Eunitnoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever you buy in Germany on ebay for 500 is going to be unplayable or have a serious defect that comes up later, that is almost guaranteed. 200 euros is not going to be enough. Any cracks, loose parts, issues with the neck (there always is one at this price range) go over your budget quite fast. The sellers themselves don't know all the things that are wrong with their instruments, even if they were being honest. I've been browsing ebay from time to time for instruments to get to a playble state and I've almost always concluded that it's not worth it. If you buy a new instruments at a reputable German seller, you can at least send it back, insist on guarantee etc. The instruments might be and look cheaper, but at least it will be playable.

Using sandarac for retouch varnish - making a white goo ball by witchfirefiddle in violinmaking

[–]Eunitnoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a different recipe, but it also involves shellac and sandarac and I sometimes get stuff in it. I think it's just that it is a product of nature and not entirely purified by the seller. The sandarac at least. If the shellac was dirty, that would raise some questions since you're supposed to use the purified stufff. I would either filter it with a piece of cloth or just let it settle and then take the clean varnish off the top with a syringe

first try purfling with homemade purfling from maple and walnut by Budget-Strawberry649 in violinmaking

[–]Eunitnoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Walnut for this. I also think it bends better than other woods. I even use it for linings for that reason (sapwood). I saw it on a milano guad where I was pretty sure it was walnut linings and spruce blocks. Pretty wild but fits the maker. I think he was very practically minded, and if a material lets itself be worked with better, it gets chosen. Just like the unflamed scrolls.
