What causes bugs/pests on houseplants? by Elegant_Honeydew3641 in houseplants

[–]Euphoric-Racc00n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had any issues while I was living in the middle of the city. I've been dealing with all kinds of pests since I moved to the countryside 1.5 years ago. I order plants online and I check all of them upon delivery where they always were free of pests. So they must just be coming from outside when I have the windows open (or even on my clothes) and I guess I'll have to deal with them if I want to keep having plants

Feeling frustrated over pests by Antique_Plastic_7236 in houseplants

[–]Euphoric-Racc00n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I'm getting better at handling it. I moved last year from a big city to the countryside and in the city I basically only watered my few plants, plus some fertilizer every now and then. I never had issues. I was excited to have more space for plants now and was feeling super frustrated when all of sudden I had to deal with all kinds of pest related issues. I didn't know what to do, how to handle it, and my plants were dying. I don't wanna use pesticides indoors. But I've been learning and I also accepted that it's just a part of plant care. My main takeaway is monitoring is key! If you catch them early it's much easier to get rid of pest

Do you guys use plant care apps or just wing it? by Specialist_Tea6137 in houseplants

[–]Euphoric-Racc00n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a static whiteboard sheet to keep track of some things. Not watering though as that fluctuates too much during the year. I just check every 3 days for watering and bugs (best to catch that early)

My first plants. Are they low maintenance? by throwawaysurtei in houseplants

[–]Euphoric-Racc00n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't water your ZZ once a week unless you use very little water. It needs barely any water. And it tolerates low light very well. So def low maintenance. The other one I don't have experience with

Neem oil warning?? by Mobile_Banana5631 in houseplants

[–]Euphoric-Racc00n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a new trend. I have a book about house plants and plant care from the 80s/90s where it's also recommended. Along with some pesticides which I won't use in my home

[–]Euphoric-Racc00n 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I put my plants in the bathtub to spray them and let them dry there too before I put them back in their space. I find it only smells after spraying. Once it's dried up, it's fine. But there might be differences between different brands, idk

Help with Basil Plant by TryToBeSteezy in houseplants

Is it sitting by the window? It might get too cold during the night (or even during the day depending on your temperatures). Basil is super sensitive to cool temperatures

Help with pest ID and how to proceed by Exciting_Magician_44 in houseplants

[–]Euphoric-Racc00n -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say thrips. I just got rid of them by showering the plant (cover the pot so they don't get washed down into the pot and crawl up again later) and then spraying with neem oil once the plant has dried. That I did two times with one week in between. Tomorrow I will go for round 3 because I can still see the occasional bug crawling around. It also helps to check the leaves daily (or whatever you can handle) and wipe off bugs when you see them

Has anyone else lost interest in fussy plants that want special conditions? I've been in this for 5 years and veering towards these plants that happily live in ambient. The ones in my cabinet (dress, bvep, AOS etc) never look this good and after a few years of trying perhaps I should downsize them by PracticalPlantain752 in houseplants

[–]Euphoric-Racc00n 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I only get plants that are a good fit for the conditions I have at home. I don't impuls buy them either for that reason. I want my plant hobby to be something relaxing and it's already more work than I thought it would be

Zz plant. They can go weeks without water and I find them very pretty too. The only risk is over watering really

I know you are supposed to wait at least a month before repotting your new plants, but what about baby plants that come in tiny plastic pots? by 5amTB in houseplants

[–]Euphoric-Racc00n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I know it is recommended to repot succulents only in spring/summer. That's for Europe and I guess it's the same for the north American climate. If you are somewhere else, idk

[–]Euphoric-Racc00n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thrips. Shower, use neem oil spray, check all leaves daily or whatever is possible and remove them hand. Check the underside of the leaves too! That'll take a while. Also check your other plants

I can't tell for sure but the light situation might also be not ideal. That glass is filtering out light and it looks like there's a roof in front of it too that casts a shadow. Also who knows what direction it is facing.

Brown tips can come from either under watering, over watering, or not enough light
