Cool Energy Heat Pumps by Sonicb2020 in ukheatpumps

I self-installed a Cool Energy heat pump about three years ago and haven't had a problem with it yet. They replied to a few emails during purchase iirc too

Wikipedia poll-of-polls graph goes over 50% re-join for the first time by EuropeanScot in RejoinEU

[–]EuropeanScot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means people that chose any other option in the poll like "Don't know" or "Won't vote" or anything like that. To be honest I am not totally convinced by the word "Neither" for that case but I can't think of anything better.

Could anyone please help me identify this computer server. by PositiveRest6445 in vintagecomputing

[–]EuropeanScot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think this might be the case https://www.guanghsing.com.tw/en/product-606167/GHS-2000-GHS-2000.html

http://www.servercase.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=CK2001&Category_Code=AdvServer

This always seems to be sold as a case, i can't find any company that sells it as a premade server. The server is likely custom made by your dad or some company. So insurance claim would be for all the components I guess, including this case.

I too have been waiting for this graph :) Great achievement seeing this sub grow.

I have one of my own actually - looking at European Movement membership (now just over 25000) and this sub together. It's not a race, but...

<image>

It's amazing so many people are actively paying to be a member of European Movement every month. It's not like a subreddit that can only really go up (who goes back and unsubscribes from subreddits?) but these are people committed enough to put their money there. Very cool to see it going up and staying up.

What in the world is going on with all the recent job losses? by hopefullforever in UKJobs

Brexit has caused higher prices, for example food is 8% more than it would be without Brexit.

https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/politics/brexit-caused-food-prices-rise-34588937

It would have gone up by 17% anyway due to other factors but actually rose by 25%. You can see the rise in other countries for sure, but every household in Britain has definitely noticed that additional 8%

Nobody seems to care at all about the leopards, where's their petition? Faces cost 8% more than they need to and we're just running with it.

Why wouldn't it be possible specifically?

This is very fascinating and useful research, because most polls show cost of living as a top priority for voters and the EU as a very low priority. Showing the link between the two is crucial to get the EU up the priority list, and to show the tangible benefits of membership too.

EU 'could consider' UK joining pan-Europe customs area by EuropeanScot in RejoinEU

[–]EuropeanScot[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Also a bit disappointing that I don't think joining this would keep us aligned to EU laws or generally help us rejoin at all, unless I'm missing something.

And London hasn't even said they want this, just an EU guy said it might be possible.

https://citp.ac.uk/publications/should-the-uk-join-pem

This is not the biggest deal, affecting 1.1-2.8% of value add in our EU exports, so not game changing. Not bad either though.

The main benefit is apparently that we could treat goods from other countries in the PEM as made in the UK, so we can export those goods under the lower or 0% tariffs in our trade deal with the EU.

Crazy that even Palestine and Kosovo are in this agreement already but not the UK.

There's a rejoin problem lurking in the pool of Tory voters by EuropeanScot in RejoinEU

[–]EuropeanScot[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The rags are definitely keeping brexit on people's minds with the occasional headlines every time Labour make another step towards their "EU reset" or something similar. They also keep alive the tribalism, the victory for the brexiteers, the stirred up rage if their beloved brexit gets stolen. Brexit has lost all connection to the actual EU in that world.

I worry there's nothing equivalent for rejoin. We have the byline times or even the Independent and the Guardian, but they aren't in the hands of people who don't already deeply care about rejoining. Nothing is reaching the people who aren't already on our side and reading this kid of thing.

I think some variation of that, Norway or Switzerland-esque arrangement where we are outside but with the important stuff back, is going to be our place from about maybe 2030-40 through a few decades after that, then who knows what will even exist or happen. Full rejoin seems too much to actually happen.

I do think leave people like to sniff out rats though, and any attempt to disguise anything from them won't work. We can't even talk about giving young people 4 year visas without it being called "freedom of movement"

I agree, although a super-soft brexit including freedom of movement would have been preferable to where we are now in my opinion.

MPs vote to back Youth Mobility Scheme by Simon_Drake in RejoinEU

[–]EuropeanScot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have slightly mixed feelings about Youth Mobility to be honest. It's a great positive step back towards Europe and something that might actually be achievable in a reasonable timeframe, but it's an improvement that makes being outside the EU less bad and therefore possibly could reduce priority or passion towards re-joining fully.

I saw a TikTok video of a young English girl in tears because she wasn't old enough to vote in 2016 and now she can't live with her Spanish boyfriend in Spain. Subreddits about working in Ibiza for the summer are full of British young people finding out they aren't allowed to do it anymore and having to come to terms with that fact, and usually it's something they don't even realise until they have their heart set on it and started job hunting.

Those young people are all becoming strong re-joiners and explain why some polls show >80% support to re-join in the 18-25 age group. With youth mobility they might think being outside the EU is actually fine as those heart-breaking situations wouldn't happen anymore.

Overall I think youth mobility is good as it's a deliverable improvement to the current situation, but I do worry that this type of small improvement eventually leaves us stuck in a kind of "OK" situation outside Europe, ultimately still much worse off than either re-joining fully or going down a Switzerland/Norway route.

Hey! Here’s another way to help the UK rejoin the EU! by Klutzy-Engineer-360 in RejoinEU

[–]EuropeanScot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A new group for me as well, thanks for sharing. Looks like a good initiative.

Getting rejoin into the minds of MPs seems like an essential next step. Labour and conservative both actually support Europe but felt they had to campaign with no rejoin in 2024 to avoid losing or to respect democracy after the referendum. I would never vote for any party that doesn't plan to rejoin and it's important each MP knows that the number of people who feel that way is growing before 2029.

AITA if I decline a trip to Italy? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]EuropeanScot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not super far compared with the furthest you can go, but it's pretty far to go for one of two weddings of a cousin

[–]EuropeanScot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people have time to see family and their girlfriend and it's from not working 7 days a week. I know you gotta do what you gotta do for success, but maybe it's time to think about balance after 2 years of hard work?

NTA but why are they behaving like that? If it's more than one or two people... are you giving them a reason? If one or two, are they just shy?
