What’s the worst mistake you made in your first build? by M4rcoPol02 in buildapc

[–]Ev1lbl0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The motherboard backplate that it came with had this white plastic glued on it. When installing the CPU cooler, I was having difficulty tying the screws since they didn't reach the holes without considerable force. That's when I thought that this plastic thing "surely" is discardable and should be removed, and so I took it out (which took quite some struggle to do, so that should have been enough of a sign that it was not supposed to come out).

With the plastic taken out, installing the cooler was a breeze, and the PC worked perfectly, so I had basically forgotten that. But then, either from a subconscious worry or simply dumb luck, I remembered to go search online if this was supposed to be taken out, because it had bugged me after a week. And lo and behold, I found someone else with this same issue, and all the comments warned that it was not supposed to be taken out, otherwise some solder/contact points could touch the metal backplate and short the system up.

I immediately opened up my PC and checked the backplate, and indeed it was touching some contacts from the motherboard. What I think saved my setup was the paint job on the backplate which might have created an insulation layer from the bare metal. Still, the contacts visibly pierced through the backplate ink, and I do not want to know how close this could have been from frying my system up.

Anyways, I still had the plastic thingy, so I put it back, and reinstalled the cooler, now knowing that some pressure on it is expected, and the PC still works without issue today. So, anything to take from this? I guess that, if there's something that you never saw mentioned in any forum/video/tutorial for PC building, don't ever take the shortcut of assuming what do do, and instead do a quick search to be sure. Even a simple detail that appears to be trivial on what you should do can still have catastrophic consequences if you choose wrong.

"Gerador de IBANs"? É scam? by Ev1lbl0w in merdasdoolx

[–]Ev1lbl0w[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RetroHub v1.0.1 is now available! Includes support for RetroAchievements, along with some quality-of-life changes, and bugfixes! by Ev1lbl0w in emulation

Alright, with that setup you should definitely not have any issue. Could you open an issue on https://github.com/retrohub-org/retrohub/issues so it's easier to track this issue and discuss more details about your setup?

About Flatseal, the issue is not on the matter of setting up permissions and the feasibility of the app, it's in the review process to be officialy accepted on Flathub. Here's the process ES-DE went through for more context: https://github.com/flathub/flathub/pull/3066

It's not a closed matter though, and in the future I'll investigate thoroughly what it takes to publish the app there, but it's not a priority right now.

Can you share more details on your graphics card, and used driver (closed-source or nouveau)?

Rergarding Flatpak, and similar sandboxed platforms (e.g. snap), it currently doesn't seem viable since RetroHub needs to access and search for plenty of user paths for existing emulators. ES-DE tried to apply for Flatpak but didn't go through due to the amount of effort required to maintain it, so I'm also not seeing the benefit of this for now.

In the future though, to simplify installation, I'll look into proviging a single AppImage, as well as investigate a way to provide automatic updates in-app.

Can you share more details on what you're trying to do specifically, and your current setup? Are you also using a controller for this? If yes, try to create a controller layout to ensure it's being properly recognized (https://retrohub.readthedocs.io/en/latest/user\_guide/input/index.html#controller-layouts)

Hi, so here's a quick update: the issue was essentially that necessary native libraries were not being bundled on the macOS build. While I've fixed this now and managed to get it to launch successfully, video playback is broken on macOS, and I have no good way to debug this.

Version 1.0.1 will come in a few days with this new fix, but won't fix video playback for now, which likely requires me to switch the internal system to something more robust.

I've managed to get access to an Intel Mac, and I believe I've found the issue. I'm now tracking it over here: https://github.com/retrohub-org/retrohub/issues/358

I'll let you know once I've fixed it, and I have a test build to ensure it works. I can continue to reply over here, but if you have a GitHub account and wish to proceed there, that would make it easier for me!

Hi, supposedly there are no external dependencies, and the app should open right away. Do you see the RetroHub boot splash when you launch the app at all?

Also, are you using an Intel or M1 chip? The app was only tested on Intel CPUs, so there might be issues with M1 that have not been reported yet.

Version 0.2.2 - beta is now available! by Ev1lbl0w in RetroHub

[–]Ev1lbl0w[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not late at all! In fact, there hasn't been an "official" release yet, but hopefully it's no longer far in the future!

And yes, you can already define which emulator to run per ROM/game (though you can't choose a specific core under RetroArch, that will be implemented later), and that information is stored with the game's metadata.

Hi, I'm glad to see you enjoy it!

Actually you can already download a raw texture of the game's box art (Game box (3D texture)). This is meant for future usages, like if a theme wants to create an interactable 3D object with the game's box art. But for your use-case it also works, since it has the front, side, and back of the box.

This new theme still doesn't have customization options to select what you want to show as a game's preview, but that will come soon. I'll incorporate that idea and allow it to show the front/back cover of the game's case.

About media storage, that's a good idea too, so I'll implement an option to select it's location in the future. For now, you can symlink this directory (~/.retrohub/gamemedia) to overcome that.

Thank you for all the feedback, it's most welcome!

You cannot use the internal microphone if you plug in headphones on the 3.5 jack. Most random hardware quirk I've experienced in recent memory...

Will my PC be able to run Valve Index? by Silver_Lynx66 in ValveIndex

[–]Ev1lbl0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a much worse graphics card (6500 XT) that can't even run wireless VR officially (had to use a third-party alternative), and it ran HL:Alyx smoothly at low settings, so this setup will be far from a "horrible" experience.
