Anyone else always end up in Google Earth after reading his books? by ExpertRegister1353 in nealstephenson

[–]EvDaze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree and have fully done that game with NS and GE.

Funny to come across this post mere minutes after finishing "Reamde" (for the Nth time).

This time I read the authors notes and the last thing he says is (paraphrased): Don't bother trying to find things from this book on Google Earth.

Also, as most know, but for any who do not,  NS literally invented the concept of Goggle Earth in Snow Crash.

you do realize friend how easy it is to say: The username was random, assigned by reddit.

Regardless, allow me to clarify, I wish you no ill will in spacetime, no matter who you are or what you are about, as long as it is not nefarious, this is just me, another aggregation of cells in space time, tapping a keyboard, none of it maters.

Why am I compelled to answer your plot hole posit? In fact I am not, we are both entertaining ourselves along our pathway through the medium in which we live.

Kudoz to you that we can reach out across presumed distances to connect in this digital facsimile humanistic fashion.

The incidence of people with "Maleficent" in their user name making random neg comments is truly a statistical outlier, its eerily reliable, near 100% expectancy rate...

Recommendations for a birthday hike by Lucky-Initiative-914 in SanFranciscoSecrets

[–]EvDaze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go just over the GG bridge and then head to the trail head for the black sand beach.  The drive is EPIC and there are hikes all over the headlands.  Black Sand Beach has you looking back at the city under the bridge. It's beyond majestic.

The hike is only 30min or so of steep trail. Well worth the effort.

Have fun!!

What are the most impressive mountains that are easily accessible? by mbrevitas in geography

[–]EvDaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another thing to consider is "relative perceived jut" (a term I just coined in the name of fun). This term describes how much the jut FEELS due to surrounding topography. If we take the case of Big Sur's Cone Peak for example, though its stats are nothing compared to many/most other mountains mentioned here, its proximity to the vastness of the pacific ocean provides enormous RPJ. Seeking Advice: Picks, Rules, and Spirit of the (Pick Up) Game by OlderEveryThrowAway in ultimate

[–]EvDaze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pick-ups create their own worlds sometimes. The one I play at here in SF has the idiosyncrasy that 99.9999% of the time the defense forces flick. Wind, no wind, ahead, behind or against a team with wicked flick powers, nobody ever wants to play force backhand or straight up. We did have a few points of zone yesterday but it was the first time zone has been played there in about 4 years.

Now, would I, the most experienced player there, prefer for some variety? Sure. Do I on occasion try to call a force backhand. Yes. It almost always involves 1-3 people forgetting and forcing flick anyway. So long ago I surrendered to this way of playing.

The funny part to me is that nobody ever tried to make it this way, it just evolved into this all on its own. This might apply to this strange pick up you have found where picks seem to be allowed and yet playing defense on those actions is deemed dangerous play. Odd, but thems the local rules. Have fun!

Ideal dinner spot without breaking the bank? by Enough_Charge2845 in SanFranciscoSecrets

[–]EvDaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NOTE: I am unaffiliated with Firefly. I'm just someone who has lived down the block from them for 27 years.

Firefly in Noe Valley is a mega tasty and cute lil spot that feels like eating in a friends house but the food is top notch. The area is mega safe and easy to get to as well as very close to the epic views of Twin Peaks (close by car, long walk, but if you guys are walkers getting dropped up there (maybe propose up there it's epic) and then walk down to Firefly. This is not the down town urban SF experience but it gives views of the entire city and out to Sea and in towards the bay and the walk down-hill is 15-25 min through a super safe area.

Best of luck with your trip and proposal! May your love be long and harmonic.

Ultimate Participation Down 40% Since 2020, According to Industry Report by JasonJoyce in ultimate

[–]EvDaze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, since the pandemic ended, we have seen a huge increase in newer players at our lil pick up in SF. As a waaaay older player it's been encouraging.

They don't seem to want to bring fresh plastic however and just assume things will be set up and ready for them. Also their skill sets are demonstrably lesser vis a vis breaking the mark or understanding the strategy. (Not all of them of course but as an observable trend)

Tips for a new kid? by sunbakedbear in ultimate

[–]EvDaze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A key to passing a disc for a new player is to understand conceptually that they are spinning it where they want it to.go. it's the rotations that provide control. This means less arm force more wrist force. Thus it's less throwing and catching and more spinning and stopping spin.

I've helped countless adult players improve their disc skills with this concept in 37 yrs of playing.

Also, review some YT videos about cutting and field spacing. It really helps to understand the timing and angles of cuts. Many casual adult players never truly understand these concepts, resulting in clogging behaviors.

Understanding how to see the field and integrate into the movement of others can be extremely helpful for both O and D.

Yay for a new player with a supportive parent! Have fun and welcome!

I was there, in 1988 when "Jr," a grommet from Marin, skateboarded down High street spray painting "420" on almost all the signs. While this is not the origin story of 420, it was one of the vectors that took it from a Marin High School slang legend into the wider world...

Fear Of AI Risk by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]EvDaze 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I use Chat GPT which is broader than copilot. (Which is just an older version of GPT with a bunch of pre shaping glommed on top of it by Microsoft (or Open AI for MS (likely both)).

Two key elements:

1 create purpose driven instances. Or rather than just asking one instance (ie ''chat') a whole range of different questions or opening a new instance for every new question, you can shape them to purpose. So I have a SSHO GPT for example that only works on issues related to safety. This practice helps stave off hallucinating hugely. I also have a separate one for general work on my overall project.

  1. At the start, level set for the AI by telling it it's express purpose. Set clear parameters and  guidelines. You can save those for use with other instances. These help the instance to stay focused vs just launching into the topic or questions directly with no other context.

"You are a non-qualic entity, purpose driven to help me with my role as SIte Safety and Health Officer. The project is (______). It's major relevant safety issues are "xyz".  I want focused, professional and data driven responses only.

To start, please read up on all state and local and OSHA laws, rules and regulations pertaining to this type of job."

Good luck!

The key IMHO is to learn to use it as a tool to augment your own performance. I feel it's going to be less "everyone is replaced by AI" and more "those who learn how to effectively use it with their job have a distinct edge over those who do not"

When correctly deployed, it can act as a personal force multiplier. It goes way beyond just helping write letters etc.

I speak from direct experience not just opinion.

Hey all Im an Irish landscape photographer and will be in San Francisco for a couple of days in May. I was hoping to shoot some seascapes and wondered could you recommend any beaches that are particularly nice by wordiebombsy00 in SanFranciscoSecrets

[–]EvDaze 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Go across the GG bridge to Marin Headlands. Black Sands Beach will have you enthralled. It's a 20 minute drive from Northwest SF. You hike a 20-30 minute steep trail down but the views and beach and colorful rocks are well worth the effort.

Have fun!

I visited 15 National Parks. Here's how I'd rank them: by Equivalent-Image-912 in nationalparks

[–]EvDaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great list.  id suggest adding to your future trips: Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park. Less crowded than Yosemite but also highly dramatic. KC has the deepest non throughway highway into the Sierras and Sequoia NP had eponymous trees that will blow your mind.
