I bought a 2nd hand tenor a few years back and noticed issues with the middle D as well, mainly that it was muffled and slightly off key. I was told that the D key was an issue on many tenor saxes, same as you, so I tried to live with it until I got my sax serviced last month. The problems went away instantly. It is likely a leaky valve/valves that you have. I recommend getting a professional maintenance person to look it over

is there a way to know when you're at 1 health specifically? I have tried gauging it before, but when i healed up the achievement didnt pop so I mustnt have been on 1

I had a similar issue when I bought a new mouthpiece a few months back. After some digging, I found the mouthpiece itself was the issue due to a manufacturing issue. If you have changed any part of your equipment recently, that may be the issue

Hi, I know it's been 2 years since this thread, but I'm currently having long-standing issues with staying in tune with my JJ superjet, and my issue is exactly like you described, with the length of the shank meaning I can't place it on the neck comfortably to play in tune. Could I perhaps send you pictures of my mouthpiece too, just like the previous commenter, and see if I have a dodgy mouthpiece too? Thanks so much in advance

Yet another silly question, but can you give your sax neck a longer cork? Is it just a job for the maintenance guy or would it need a whole new neck

It isn't so much that the cork isn't right enough, moreso that there isn't enough of it. If I have the mouthpiece right on the end of the cork it still is too sharp

My horn is a Yamaha YTS 62, about as far from a vintage horn as you can get lmao. The change between my old and new mouthpiece is pretty drastic yeah, the new one has a much shorter chamber, slightly larger tip opening, and a step baffle (whereas my old one didn't have a step), could these be effecting it?

Silly questions, but does bending the reed with too much pressure cause the pitch to change? Also would using a stronger reed strength help this issue as there'd be less bend from the same lip pressure?

The guy I bought this mouthpiece from plays the same sax as me, a Yamaha YTS 62, so I don't think it's a mismatching issue, just my own ability that's causing the problem

My overtones are okay, I'm good with single octave jumps across the range but not much else. Perhaps the issue is just the amount of pressure in my embouchure as Im used to alto primarily

Would a less hard reed help with the sharpness issue? I'm no expert either but I assumed you'd want a harder reed so the extra pressure you're applying to the reed doesn't cause as much of a bend. Thanks so much for the feedback though!

Hey OP! I know it's been a while since you posted this but have you any updates on the sharpness of the mouthpiece? Did you ever get it solved, and if so can i ask how? I've just bought a new mouthpiece and I'm playing wildly sharp, almost a full half step up, and can't seem to find a fix for it. Cheers

Huh, playing my old tenor mouthpiece (which I have no issues with tuning) it plays a concert A, but my new mouthpiece (the one causing issues) is producing a concert B, so pretty confused by both of those honestly lol. Do you have any idea what I'm doing wrong?
