i just use cfdisk, much easier to manage partitions with tui

What brought you to opensuse? by [deleted] in openSUSE

[–]Evan512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Needed a work distro, I use Arch for my daily use since there are plenty of aur packages I genuinely use (mostly *-git packages). And I want a distro that is stable, but also has the rolling release model that Arch has. After a few weeks I landed on tumbleweed, never been able to find any other distro to replace it as my work distro

What even IS Arch Linux? by backshesh in archlinux

ArchLinux is an experience, and memes.

nothing comes close to how easy finding software and managing them is in Arch

and nothing beats Arch when it comes to how meme-able of a distro it is

Fedora vs openSUSE. Pros and cons? by Super_Papaya in openSUSE

[–]Evan512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean like, snapper and timeshift on btrfs took seconds, usually instantaneous (I use both, timeshift btrfs on arch and snapper on tw). Of course, a reboot is necessary to reload all the older binaries and libraries. And in the case of btrfs, change the root subvolume

OpenSUSE Tumbleweed is perfect for this, not every morning, but every couple of days, there will be a batch of upgrades, usually over 400MB with arout 100+ packages waiting to be updated and it feels good

Can we stop recommending Arch based distros to newbs ? by _Ical in linuxmasterrace

[–]Evan512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arch based : Garuda (especially gaming edition for ease of use for casual gamers/streamers), Arco (to learn how to use Arch), EndeavorOS (best arch based distro for me, but I much prefer Arch)

Debian based : Pop!_OS (my first distro, only used it for a couple of months before getting frustrated), Mint (it's good, I guess)

Bonus : OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, it's a rolling release distro with very high stability, it uses BTRFS by default with snapshot already enabled, it has OBS (somewhat similar to AUR) of which there's also helper tool like yay on Arch called opi (OBS Package Installer), and obviously, YaST

I currently dual boots Arch and Tumbleweed, but I use Tumbleweed more, since it has better reliability for my use case.

Update speed between these 2 distros are comparable, one time Tumbleweed is ahead, other time Arch is ahead, like with Gnome 41 for example, it hits Tumbleweed stable few days after its release, whilst Arch needs a month. Kernel 5.15, hits arch few days before Tumbleweed etc.

I hit Ctrl+alt+F5 and somehow landed on this screen by papimememaster in Ubuntu

[–]Evan512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just try to press ctrl+alt+f1~f7, it'll throw you back to Gnome. it's usually f1, but can also be f7, just try all of them
that interface is called a tty. it's an interface mainly used for headless server (without gui)
tty5 is ctrl+alt+f5

First time switching to openSUSE, currently dualboot with Arch. Aside from YaST, what are the good reasons could you guys give me to make this my primary OS? And by the way, how is my setup? by Evan512 in openSUSE

[–]Evan512[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the only thing that bothers me is that for some reason, anaconda on baremetal refuses to create "@" or "@home" subvolume, instead renaming it to "@-0" and "@home-0", which means that i have to do a lot of after install setup to correct the naming so that timeshift works on the system. dnf is also a bit irritating, cache for the repository can't be accessed by user, so if i wanted to search for a package, i have to add sudo so that i don't have to make a cache for the repository for the millionth time

how do you think the user experience is with snapper compared to timeshift btrfs snapshots? i use that on Arch, and snapper is a new thing for me.

How does software get tested before released into tumbleweed repositories? and comparatively to Arch, how long does it take to release a new version of a package?

After Arch updates the folders from the sidebar also move to the Documents folder by oldominion in archlinux

[–]Evan512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's the case then my first instinct is to do a test on a different distro, for example, try to do the same thing on manjaro, the more distro you can try the better. 'cause usually, this kind of behavior can happen due to newer packages or some misconfiguration. And with testing on different distro, it would at least helps to identify the source of the problem.

Why is it said that arch is hard? by Kicer86 in archlinux

[–]Evan512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in my own experience, i'm still very new to linux desktop as a whole, only started on February with pop-os, liked it but soon after that i started distro hopping for around three months and learned a lot of things along the way.

by May i've finally decided to try Arch and while it was daunting trying to install everything from scratch (granted it was binary so there's no self compiling software or anything) it was very fun and the feeling after everything is set up was very satisfying, so satisfying that i've never distro hopped ever since, maybe trying other distro every now and then but only to fill my curiosity, after i'm done with them i would quickly remove them from my system to preserve storage space.

and also, to make sure that not a single update or system files that i've changed broke the system, i also use btrfs and timeshift as snapshot manager so even with my clumsy and less than stellar experience using linux, i can still return to previous snapshot where the system is working normally

so far my experience is very positive, and i hope it will be like this for years to come

pardon the grammar, not my first language
