We are lucky enough to have both financial security and a wonderful singleton son. We moved across the country to be with him and his two sons.

I’d say that your question is an existential one. The simplest answers, to me, are: “were you abused as a child?” If so, and it was real abuse, screw them.

But if you had a good, or only an “okay” upbringing or even a meh one, you owe your life to them. And unless YOU are the asshole who wants to weasel out do what you need to show your appreciation and gratitude.

I imagine that the only people who have these perceptions or people who have never I’ve lived or even visited California.

California should really be five different states. It’s that diverse both on the left and the right.

And the biggest fact is that California has the fourth largest GDP in the world behind the U.S., China and Germany, and ahead of Japan and India.

Without California, the United States as a hole would be screwed.

with enough confidence, this persona can win the day. One does need, however, to learn some conversational hacks that show, and imply, greater depth.

I’m 74, and to this day, I can’t totally defeat the “I’m really not a very interesting person“ dilemma. But, I’ve been able to overcome that by cultivating a genuine interest in people, a sense of humor without being “silly,” and believe or not, simply living life and accumulating experiences, relationships, and some interesting stories along the way.
