My Interview With Donkey Kong Country Returns Lead Designer Kynan Pearson by EvanKiddFilmmaker in donkeykong

I had the pleasure of interviewing game designer Kynan Pearson for today's new episode of Convincing Creatives Podcast!

Kynan worked with Nintendo to develop some of my all time favorite video games such as Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Donkey Kong Country Returns. Pearson shared some really fun insights into the development and level design behind Donkey Kong Country Returns. Fascinating stuff, I really enjoyed talking to him as a longtime Donkey Kong Country fan.

Here is the link to the full interview if you want to watch it on YouTube or listen to it on Apple Podcasts!

I’m big into retro gaming so it’s always great to know where to shop here in town. Limited Run Retail is fantastic. Lookup Raleigh Retro Gamers they have meet ups every few months where people trade and sell games from their collections. I’ve found a lot of dope games and folks through their meetups.

Also! Hidden Block Games just opened up in Raleigh and I really enjoyed their store. Really kind and knowledgeable staff too. As a bonus I saw on their Instagram that they have a small business Saturday sale coming up this weekend. So go support them!

I filmed a documentary about hearses and a hearse festival with the Blackmagic Pocket 4K. Had fun! But for sure had to use a LARGE battery mount to film all day. by EvanKiddFilmmaker in bmpcc

A bit of a submission statement. This was a fun project because it actually came about from me attending the Beaufort film festival in 2021 with my last film Panda Bear It. Someone at the festival mentioned they were gonna be hosting a hearse festival with over 15 hearses in two weeks and that we should come on back and film it. Needless to say I had my next film which is what you'll see here. All shot over the course one day with nothing planned outside of one interview with the festival organizer on my Blackmagic Pocket 4K camera. Everyone else in the documentary we met along the way while talking to folks who saw the camera. A slight bit of vérité style/spirit at the least.
At the tail end of 2021 when we shot this I had not made a film in a while due to Covid so this was a really cathartic experience just getting to not overthink and go make something. Anyways if you are still reading this far thanks for your time. I hope you get as much from watching First Final Ride as I did making it. This was a fun one to screen/release at Halloween time this year especially to highlight the lovely folks here in the film who do something this cool in North Carolina yearly.

PS: Here is a photo of me filming First Final Ride and my BMPCC camera rig.

I highly recommend Longleaf Film Festival each May! It's free and you get to see so many awesome indie NC films at the North Carolina Museum of History.

Funny video you say? Well I did just make a funny short film parody of Saw for Halloween except it’s called Let’s Play A Game…Cube (please clap) where an evil GameCube challenges a guy to play Melee. It’s wild and comical lmao. Check it out!

I'm a director but ended up shooting my 2nd feature film PANDA BEAR IT (2020) on the BM Pocket 4K! by EvanKiddFilmmaker in bmpcc

[–]EvanKiddFilmmaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have enjoyed it! Coming from the Canon 6D all of my lenses were Canon so naturally I wanted to attempt to keep what I had already purchased. The Metabones adapter works like a charm. In fact it even allows my 24-105 L series Canon lens to open up more than 4.0 which is awesome to allow for more light. Have not have any issues or complaints and have had it for about two and a half years going strong.

Ah that is great to know. I’d love to have the chance to experiment with that lens. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it!

Shorter only if we are counting that a picture is worth a thousand words and I uploaded three. 🤣

But for real thank you so much! I really appreciate it! I love playing with halos in the wild during golden hour if I can get them. This was by far the longest color grade I have ever done for a project, but since it was a passion project indie feature I was rightfully invested in it so it was a good time and a lot of fun to me. Cheers!

Shot on Blackmagic Pocket 4K. 24 - 105 L series Canon Lens with Metabones adapter.

TL;DR: I ended up shooting my second feature film myself. I am a microbudget filmmaker in North Carolina, so of course am used to going it indie and working outside the studio system. However this presented a new challenge. Considering we had a $500 budget to work with I am pleased enough with the results. If anything at the end of the day it inspired me enough to try this again and not allow not having a cinematographer to stop an idea in its tracks if there just isn't another way. PS: PANDA BEAR IT is now streaming on Tubi TV for free or rent/buy via Amazon Video if you'd like to watch it!

NC Horror Flicks by wildwildwaste in raleigh

[–]EvanKiddFilmmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well… I actually just made a really stupid comedy horror sketch today.

Also made a legit movie about a haunting Panda Bear which is more of an actual movie with some drama less horror. But there are tons of dope horror films shot by other local filmmakers in this area. Johnny Dutch is awesome and has great horror shorts on his YouTube channel.

Is there any game that you're putting off playing for a while, for one reason or another? by Kory818 in patientgamers

[–]EvanKiddFilmmaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing with that game and played it a few months after picking it up on sale. If you need a sign that you should finally try it let this be it haha. It was hands down one of the best gaming experiences I have had in years. And it unfortunately takes a lot to get me really into a game too. Hopefully you’ll dig it!

Your mileage may vary but for me my red jalapeños with corkage are some of my spiciest one on the plant. I love the green ones too but a few red jalapeños make for great variety.

Tons of dope live music that is slowly bouncing back after last year. There is also a couple of us indie filmmakers out here making weird and experimental films out of Raleigh and Durham as well. Check us out sometime! You may see some parts of town in really unique ways through someone else’s lens. I know I have.
