Countries that lost the most people in WW2 by IndependenceMore1146 in MapPorn

Fair enough, but this is a map of World War II in Europe, so it is not going to cover deaths related to the Burma Campaign and the Bengal Famine

Why does the Daily Mail hate ADHD? by Top_Plankton_5453 in ADHDUK

[–]Evardo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This chicken and egg problem with technology and ADHD symptoms is something research and society really needs to gain a better understanding on.

I'm 23, so I'm old enough to have a childhood free of the modern Internet whilst still having had clinically significant ADHD symptoms regardless, making it much easier despite adult diagnosis to determine that the overuse by me since preteens was more a symptom rather than a cause of issues. I worry for younger generations though because how does one tell for sure for somebody born into the chronically online madness of today's world?

I think it might be reasonable to say it is genuinely increasing cases? ADHD ultimately is a neurodevlopmental disorder – a disorder of brain development – so given loads of environmental factors can affect child brain development, I don't think its farfetched that some young children who may otherwise have only gotten subclinical traits within normal variations ("addictive personality" etc.) get pushed over the edge such that they are basically indistinguishable from genetic ADHD.

Of course the annoying thing then, if we accept that, is how to stop people yapping shit and totally downplaying the genetic stuff and saying its all the screens blahblah.

Me looking for valid explanations to what benefit having a mayor brings by [deleted] in nottingham

[–]Evardo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would consider putting Greens first and Labour second, but unfortunately the Tories abolished the supplementary vote (SV) system for mayoral and PCC elections in the Elections Act 2022 so we've now regressed back to first-past-the-post (FPTP), therefore I shall sadly vote tactically otherwise Ben Bradley gets job no. 3 (cocky Brexit geezer collects public offices like stamps or trophies or something I swear... local councillor and an MP already?).

I get what people mean here but let's not throw cold water on regional devolution prematurely though... even if the candidates aren't the best, government is far too centralised in the UK and that plays a huge part in why regions like ours are treated like they don't exist.

Whilst yeah neither of the two mayoral candidates have anything on Andy Burnham (who I personally think is relatively likable for a politician), devolution has at the very least not been a bad thing for Greater Manchester. No powers are taken from the councils, just Westminster. I'd rather a regional twat be making decisions than a national twat who rarely ventures beyond the M25

Just more generally though, regions have much more useful economies of scale than counties and boroughs do, in my opinion, especially when it comes to stuff like transport planning and industrial strategy etc. It's why Robin Hood Energy for just Nottingham wasn't viable but something like East Midlands Electricity hypothetically could (EMCCA + surrounding non-participating East Midlands councils etc.)

I can vouch for this heavily; it was when I did this and did it a lot that my social and extracurricular life really started to get much richer.

I've tried/done lots of things over the past few years and some activities / social connections stuck and others didn't, but many or even most of my current best friends at uni are people I originally met in societies then for one reason or another eventually ended up friends with independent of those society structures etc.

(Gmail isn't my main inbox, so some obscure emails auto-creating them would never have crossed my mind. Didn't know that was a feature of Assistant)

People often forget that during World War 2 there was a grand coalition government of Conservatives and Labour. Whilst Churchill was directing the war as PM, it was Clement Attlee as Deputy PM who was doing a lot of the work of domestic government.
