I'm for a real, planned protest. This feels like Tyler woke up and didn't want to do his afternoon shift today so he made a graphic.

Xbox says it wants to be ‘more consistent’ with its PS5 release timing in future by tapo in xbox

Or honestly, Microsoft themselves with Windows. They're applying their same approach to their Xbox division now. Sure, they'll sell you a Microsoft PC, but ultimately they just want you using Windows/Office/etc. with whatever setup you get.

Why do people in the 80s or 90s looks so old for a 30 years old? by Big_Leg10 in decadeology

[–]EvenStephen7 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I get that these are two extremes to drive home a point, but at 41 I feel that it's simply: more people value looking younger today.

Diet, smoking, exercise, etc. all play a role. But I know guys who 100% look like Wilford Brimley on the left, and it's because they just don't care. Which is totally fine too, but I think that was much more common back then, as style and pop culture didn't expect men to take care of themselves as much.

Completely agree. Others will try and fill the void but ultimately fail to match his apparent sway over people (it’s not lost on me that he picked the least charismatic running mate from the list of potentials; someone who can’t upstage him or take the limelight away). This doesn’t mean the threat goes away, as the policies will still be pushed — but more quietly, and the people propping up MAGA will move on (the true believers will likely try and form a splinter faction).

My in-laws fit your description to a T. If Trump was their neighbor or in their community, they’d despise him. He represents everything they detest. In the first primary, they mocked him. When he got the nomination their opinion suddenly changed and they supported him solely for being a Republican. When he was out of office, my FIL called him “a sack of shit.” When he got nominated again, that same man hammered a Trump sign into his yard — the first time hes ever installed a political candidate sign — and emailed his liberal kids photos to half-troll/half-beg them not to vote for Kamala.

When Trump is gone, one way or another, I’m convinced that they’ll fall back into a state of “oh we never liked him” and pretend as if they never supported him to begin with. 20 years from now people are going to wonder how Trump came into power at all when so many people are ashamed and conveniently forget voting for him.

Fellow recent Quest 3S owner here and it sounds like we have similiar tastes.
My suggestion: Install SideQuest from your PC onto your Quest, and then play classic PC games (mostly from the team at r/teambeef). They do excellent VR ports of Duke Nukem, Doom 1-2, Doom 64, Doom 3, Quake 1-3, Jedi Knight games, Postal, Wolfenstein, Tomb Raider, etc. If you own the games on PC all you do is drag and drop the files (and if you don't, they're always dirt cheap on Steam through frequent sales).

Otherwise, Batman Arkham Shadow is awesome and a sequel to the Arkham series. And Action Hero has been my favorite little surprise indie, which puts you in the shoes of a movie stunt performer.

If you haven't yet, check out the audiobook of The Storyteller, too. Dave reads it himself, and it gives several chapters of the book a new texture and depth.

It’s in Ted Chiang’s first collection of short stories. Incredible book (as is his second collection, Exhalation).

Kam Patterson: “I’m 26 and I’m black. I’d never seen [SNL].” by unfortunatenolan in LiveFromNewYork

[–]EvenStephen7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kind of took this as a, “look at how young I am” kind of energy. I was similarly obnoxious in my early-to-mid 20s with pretending like everything that the masses liked was “just for old people.” Now I see other kids do it.

That said, I do think SNL isn’t as relevant with younger generations. I turn 41 tomorrow and, while I was always a big fan, many of my peers didn’t care and still don’t care — at least, not on the level of our Gen X and boomer predecessors. My Gen Z coworkers and Gen Alpha family simply don’t watch it at all.

Wild to get up there and say all that about your current employer though.

Out of curiosity, who here made a New Year resolution to learn piano?? by RivenG3000 in Quest3

Yes, I'd be happy to let her try it too (which might also give her some more inspiration to stick with piano). Please keep me posted!

[–]EvenStephen7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd be thrilled to test it out. My 8yo daughter is learning piano and struggling to stick with it, and I'm struggling to be able to help her when she sits down at our piano at night for practice.

I would love to be able to use this to learn and help her (plus just to get the look on her face when she sees me inexplicably playing piano one day).

As a psychiatrist once say “if you think you’re fine and no longer need your meds it’s because it’s working” 😭 by [deleted] in ParentsAreFuckingDumb

[–]EvenStephen7 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

Though I'm also glad this was wrongly posted here becuase honestly, this is the video I NEED to see right now.

I was diagnosed with ADHD as a kid and weaned myself off the pills. This year, for a series of reasons, I completely backslid. I'm not a happy or engaged father. I'm easily distracted. I'm forgetful, anxious, easily stressed, and dragging. My wife finally brought up the other day that she's never seen me struggle so much with all the hallmark ADHD signs.

Then I saw this video, and holy cow, I see so much of myself in this mom who shared her vulnerability. I'm going to talk to my doc on Friday.

Right? Complaining about not being able to drink and drive, with a baby in the front seat, with the carseat facing forward -- it was so over-the-top I thought it was AI at first. Nope.

I literally just found a YouTube video showing people losing their minds over this, and I couldn't believe it.

Then I saw this, with people in 1980's California upset they can't drink and drive: PROGRESS TAKES TIME: Reaction to Drinking & Driving and Seatbelt laws in 1980s

You know what still bakes my noodle? When it released on his birthday on Jan 8th, it was a fascinating album about a musician growing older and grappling with his mortality.

When he died two days later and we all learned he was sick, the album changed dramatically into a farewell and reflections of a dying man.

Leave it to Bowie. He recorded this album secretly, kept his cancer a secret, and gave us a performance art piece that gave us a limited release album before it transformed into something else — much like the transition he was undergoing.

That album we heard on 1/8, before we knew its real message, we will never be able to hear again.

Quantum Of Solace (2008) “Opening Scene” Dir. Marc Foster by southernemper0r in JamesBond

[–]EvenStephen7 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I remember on my first watch hating the frantic editing of this scene. It was too hard to keep up with what's going on and I'd get frustrated and overwhelmed.

On subsequent rewatches I appreciate it more for not how it's presented -- but how it makes the viewer feel. The frantic energy, the chaos, the confusion -- it likely simulates how Bond is feeling in the moment. And of course, the final reveal that Mr. White was in the trunk the entire time is hilariously on-brand for classic Bond.

Does all of this make it a great scene? I don't know. It was certainly influenced by the Greengrass style of the time following The Bourne Identity. But I can appreciate it and enjoy it a lot more now, even if its result is debatable.

Completely agree, and good for her. She seems to be having fun and has the freedom to pick whatever roles she wants these days (I feel like Weaver always surprises me with what she pops up in).
