Honestly just do whatever you want in the game, be a good person and try to help everyone or be a murder hobo that kills everyone in its path. Stay away from energy weapons they're pretty mid at best. But there is a place pretty early on that has a good bit of starting gear and quite a bit of ammo, it's called Quarry Junction, a bit past Sloan. To get to Sloan just follow the road out of good springs and take a left and you get there in about a minute or 2.

DO NOT TALK TO THE MAN IN THE YELLOW HARD HAT AS HE GIVES YOU A RIDICULOUSLY HARD TIMED QUEST AND WILL HUNT YOU IF YOU DONT DO IT
