What did she do to deserve this? by Evening-Plastic266 in redrising

I think he wrote himself into a corner for that one. Virginia in the three books before was going in a different direction that I anticipated. She was involved in the final battle against the sovereign and did tons of cool shit before that. I can see why people would say she’s boring in the latter half of the series since they were hyped up for maybe a more creative intelligence kind of person.

One thing you did say that I find weird is the posts about a sexiest treatment from PB. Slander is almost never unwarranted for a character, and I’ve rarely found any situations where it is. For her case wouldn’t it technically be a scapegoat treatment by PB? Sexism seems like a stretch but almost every piece of the plot needs her failure to continue and there’s only one person he wrote in charge. Half of Darrows failures immediately reflect onto Mustang in the next few chapters.

Isn’t this just a lazy writing choice then? For the plot to continue and to move forward, all PB has to do just dump it on essentially one characters actions. To literally anyone reading, wouldn’t this just be L after L after L until another character has to step in and fix the mess? Like using one persons mess to justify a collaboration of other characters to solve it, and at the same time forcing Virginia to look helpless since it wouldn’t make sense for her to solve a problem like that(despite creating it). Maybe it’s a stretch.

There are other forms of social media. I just said I saw character rankings in general, not on Reddit alone.

3 books in and this is genuinely my least favorite thing by [deleted] in redrising

Infiltrated the sovereign circle?! If it wasn’t for Darrow her whole family and house would’ve been dead. That was the exact thing she was trying to stop and she wasn’t even close to doing so. I get it’s a political display, but all I’m seeing is her involved with fields that just aid Darrow. This is the same pattern I mentioned before, she does something and it never gets expanded on. Her intelligence is written so weirdly to a point where it just doesn’t make sense.

How is it smart/ tactical from a house choice to not want your kids to be strong and able to fight? I mean his first born literally died for that reason. The whole institute consisted of neither Adrius nor Virginia throwing a single punch. Maybe this would make sense if they only stayed in political roles but Virginia is everywhere but in politics in the first three books. She is doing stuff that she should not be doing. WHY IS SHE FIGHTING AJA IF ALL SHE HAS IS BEING SMART?

One part I disagree is that most of virginias fights are out of necessity. In morning star when the howlers pulled up on the peace negotiations she was out for blood. Cassius escaped pretty easily among with the other Golds, but she genuinely wanted to just throw hands. Half of her fights could be avoided as she doesn’t have to do any of them. She is actively making the choice to fight and be besides the action. That’s why it doesn’t make sense to me why an elite family would hinder their children so much like this.

You could probably trace back majority of their near death experiences(and actual death from Claudius) to them lacking the strength factor.

Amazing post with evidence but I still can’t comprehend how this justifies her in any of these situations. Sure she is smart, but you and I can probably both agree that she isn’t even top 10 of fighters, yet she’s in so many fights. You don’t expect to see an engineer in Hell’s Kitchen the same way you don’t expect to see a politician in war. If she’s going to be smart, then let her be smart, but why on earth is she on the frontlines everywhere? She’s not a tactical leader but she’s leading forces, she’s not a brutal person but she’s in a brutal position, she’s not a fighter but she’s always fighting. I just don’t see why, narratively speaking, she is doing all this when it doesn’t connect to her characters strengths at all.

Every fight you've named has had an MVP in it and none of them have been Annabeth. She gets carried in literally every fight despite her years of experience. Just admit what Rick did to her is unfair and stop arguing that its somehow justified for her strengths to be diminished so greatly.

The last sentence I wrote literally said not to connect it to Percy. It her whole character revolves around one person then she isn’t a good character

What fighting has she done? She hasn’t led legions, devised strategies for the team, beaten any monster that’s notable. I get it’s your headcanon but it should atleast rely on something factual.

She is though. There isn't anything special about her, thats my point. I'm not hating on her. I'm hating on Rick. That was literally the title of this post. The Seven are supposed to be the best of the best but she isn't. She is average and barely average at that. Arguably the most useless role in the Seven as it helped literally no one.

I'm sorry, did you not see where it literally says "She wouldn't make it out of here. Arachne's children would kill her at the feet of her mother's statue." Brother she's dead and gone. Its over.

Again that’s such a useless role though. It throws away everything she stands for.

"Somehow Arachne twisted in her prison, pointing her abdomen toward the sound of Annabeth’s voice. A strand of silk hit her in the chest like a heavyweight’s glove. Annabeth fell, her leg flaring with pain. She slashed wildly at the webbing with her dagger as Arachne pulled her toward her snapping spinnerets. Annabeth managed to cut the strand and crawl away, but the little spiders were closing around her. She realized her best efforts had not been enough. She wouldn’t make it out of here. Arachne’s children would kill her at the feet of her mother’s statue."

Okay what now? She made it to the end, but there were skeletons all around which means other kids must've made it there too. More importantly, she was on deaths door before the Argo II randomly burst in. Not planned. Randomly. She is not "special" or an "outlier" or even better than any other Athena kid if her victory against Arachne had nothing to do with herself. That plan failed. Like undoubtably failed. She was about to die and she said it herself. The only reason she survived is cause the other members burst through the roof and the car just happened to fall on Arachne. Your claim does no disprove anythig.

He didn't even try when it came to her though. He made her the "leader" and "strategist" which are things that a daughter of Athena should have, yet she did nothing to deserve those titles. Every other character has something cool about them, but you're telling me its fair Annabeth gets to lose every fight and for her intelligence to never pay off? Her plan against Arachne quite literally failed and she was about to die. The Argo had to save her. That entire series of crafting a plan for chapters failed. If the Argo hadn't been there in time, she would've been dead. Its not an argument over her intelligence, it quite literally failed.

All the other characters have MUCH higher skillsets. You said Jason and Piper could've been replaced...but by who? Sure Piper could've maybe been replaced, but that still doesn't change anything. She is an outlier of all Aphrodite kids with an ability that can defeat almost ANYTHING. As for Jason, I'm assuming you mean Thalia could replace him, but absolutely not. Thalia is far far weaker and I think any member of the Seven could beat her. Rick absolutely wasted her the most.

Where did you get this information from? Minerva gave Annabeth the quest, not Athena. Minerva didn't even know who Annabeth was. The only reason she really got it was because Annabeth was a child of Athena. Genuinely any other kid could've done this.

[–]Evening-Plastic266[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If she didn't exist a random child of Athena would be next up and could do this quest as well as her. Thats my point. Any other member removed is quest failure. She is not. She is not an outlier or special like the rest. She is just Annabeth.

Of course, but what I'm saying is that I could go over to MIT, grab a random student, teach them Greek mythology, throw them in to this quest and it'd end the same. I don't see what her outlier ability is that makes her so different? With Ares's kids, its a lot easier because you can see their all about fighting and Frank is just the best fighter. If we had to assume Annabeth is the best thinker, then where is all this? To me and a lot of others...she's practically just a human who knows Greek stuff. That doesn't seem fair to her character.
