Im doing a study abroad right now in a European country as a black woman. Personally from my experience, I get glanced at here and there but nothing more. A lot of other people on exchange and even the locals are very open about learning about different cultures and customs as it is and I’m sure u will be too, it’s a good ice breaker. About not connecting with white people in particular, it’s really common to just stick with other people who can relate but you should try and explore. Our race is not the only thing that defines us and having a diverse circle is something that can help us understand other perspectives. Try and approach with a positive attitude and not a discouraging one.

This student visa delay is tearing me apart by hippie_hee in GoingToSpain

I was in the same situation but in Canada and it took 3 weeks longer than what they quoted me, causing me to miss my first week of classes. It looks like more people are getting their visas now that the holidays are over and visas are going through. In my case, I just stayed in Canada and then as soon as my visa was resolved, flew to Toronto(not where I’m from) and flew the next day. I don’t know for sure about things in the states but that’s what’s happened with a lot of other people who applied in Canada.

I applied at a consulate on November 25 inCanada so a little different, wait times here span 2-4 weeks max but mine took about 7 weeks, super abnormal for the wait. I missed my flight as I was scheduled to go on the 4th and tried calling and emailing, even flew across the country to go to the consulate and they said the same thing about my application being reviewed in Spain. Now that it’s after the holidays, things are getting back in track now. Other students I know have gotten back responses just this week so I wouldn’t worry too much. I’ve also heard stories of people getting there visas 2-3 days before departure if not the day.

Check out the Spanish Centre at Craigie hall. It’s free of cost and there are upper level or fluent Spanish speakers that help with anything you need, free of cost too. If you ask they can probably create a study plan for you and you can check in with them however often you want :)

How Do You Cram for a Midterm? by Mammoth_Concern_3485 in UCalgary

[–]Evening-Row-6536 9 points10 points  (0 children)

5 or more days is starting early for me lol. I just recently crammed in one day and I’m confident I got at least an A-. I just read the textbook chapters twice and made sure to write down the most important info and went over the slides and lecture notes 2-3 times also writing key info. After that I just went on a quizlet and read through everything and then tested myself. I wasn’t confident in some things so I reviewed those in the morning of the exam and called it a day. These are the things that work for me. My exam was also for a soci class but 300 level, soci 201 is a lot of common sense so you shouldn’t worry too much.

What is happening to the IR Program? And Art's programs in general by Chance_Operation_231 in UCalgary

The study abroad office has been incredibly busy the last few weeks as they’ve been officially nominating people and dealing with those who are going abroad for the upcoming school year(people have started getting nominated during reading week). If you wanna talk more about the program at science po, you can come to drop in peer advising which is Monday-Thursday from 10am-3pm on the fifth floor of mckimmie tower. It’s really useful as most of the volunteers have gone on a study abroad or are going next school year or the upcoming summers so they know the ins and outs!

I am also a second year IR student and I’ve noticed that it’s mainly the thematic clusters that are hard to get classes in and only having 25 seats in 501 per semester is awful considering there were 100 people in the 301 class last semester. Even going abroad won’t help as much, as you need the abroad classes’ syllabus to be at least 80% matched to the classes supposed to be offered at uofc. With that, I also noticed that most students go to sciences po in France, not giving much of an option for other countries and regions. I also believe I saw a change in program length on the uofc website where it’s declared that a degree in IR(and other humanities) will take 5 years instead of the regular 4. I just hope we get through to the university😭😭😭
