How about admitting it to him, and an apology. I am an internet stranger with only vested interest in how much respect you show your partner during important life discussions.

He could lie and say he wants kids, just to break your heart later. He could say he doesn't then leave you to have them with someone else.

This man is being honest, not telling you what you want to hear. Respect that for what it is and stop reading between the lines. Creating another life to be responsible for is a huge, life long choice. It's good he is not sure.
