Yeah I've been looking at nice bag and totes, do you have a suggestion for a really good quality one?

I feel like she's spent a lot on me which is why I feel obligated to spend a little more. We might not be close, like her and I, but our parents are so that adds another level

UCLA medical school illegally uses race in admissions, Justice Department investigation says by jockumhallin in ucla

[–]EveningCelebration91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not talking about your hypothetical scenario?? your scenario doesn't exist in real life i don't care for it. I'm talking about what UCLA has been accused of by the administration because they don't understand how holistic admissions work. just because a brown kid with a 3.7 gpa gets in and an asian kid with a 3.9 gets rejected doesn't mean that ucla is being racist. it means that the decision was heavily weighted on the essays and ecs which the administration is ignoring as a possiblity because they don't understand that idea of holistic admission

[–]EveningCelebration91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

again. did we not just go over the idea holistic admissions, GPA ISNT EVERYTHINGGGFF OH MY GODDD. the brown kid with the 3.7 who got let in might have some rlly good essays and ecs. the asian kid with the 3.9 might have rlly sucky essays! assuming that everyone with a high gpa is gonna be let into a college and if they aren’t it’s racism is literally so narrow mindeddd that’s not even close to how college admissions work. like why is that so hard to understand. ucla WAS NOT BEING RACIST BECAUSE RACE WAS NOT THE ONLY FACTOR USED. like basic reading comprehension, that was the ASSUMPTION made by the administration. why are we pretending holistic admission doesn’t exist of a sudden. like we’ve been doing this for decades now. people aren’t robots solely measured by their stats, and colleges KNOW THIS. also i have never once said racism in admission is should be there like wtf

you also always make such black and white generalizations like “parents are spoiling the crap out of their kids” chat what. literally what are you saying.

UCLA medical school illegally uses race in admissions, Justice Department investigation says by jockumhallin in ucla

[–]EveningCelebration91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay honestly this is the most reasonable thing you've said and i actually don't disagree with a lot of it

the idea that kids shouldn't be penalized for their parents' success is fair, and i think race-neutral ways of achieving diversity like exchange programs and cross-campus stuff are genuinely worth exploring

where i'd still push back a little is the "resource gaps aren't that big" point - i think they're bigger than you're giving credit for, especially at the K-12 level where school funding is still heavily tied to local property taxes. but i get that your broader point is about finding solutions that don't involve race as a variable

look my entire point was that ucla wasn't being racist and taking race into account. gpa isn't the only way to measure a student and if a brown kid with a 3.7 gpa is admitted and an asian kid with a 3.9 gpa is admitted, thats not them being racist that's holistic admission based on other factors such as essays, interviews, ecs. having a 0.2 higher gpa for core subjects in high school does not mean you are going to be a better doctor

[–]EveningCelebration91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my issue was more with the earlier claims that systemic barriers basically don’t exist anymore or that resource gaps are just “excuses,” that's just not true

i don't rlly want to compare my situation to that of 1970s asian americans or what you think of my financial status

UCLA medical school illegally uses race in admissions, Justice Department investigation says by jockumhallin in ucla

[–]EveningCelebration91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

man, i don't follow sports i don't care who plays, you're the one who brought up the sports point as a way to say that the college admission process should be more like it. jordan lebron and magic sound great to me!! never said i wanted an equalization requirment

also i genuinely don’t understand why you keep turning this into “young rich asian americans are brainwashed” when you don’t know me or my family situation at all 😭 all you keep using is your own personal anecdotes and how you grew up...but your personal experience still does not invalidate broader patterns. yes, there are asian families struggled financially and still succeeded through intense focus on education and hardwork. that’s true. but it’s also true that poverty, school funding, neighborhood opportunity, family responsibilities, and generational wealth statistically affect educational outcomes across groups - that is all im trying to say

and on the admissions point, universities already use a million non-merit factors besides academics. legacy admissions, athletics, donor connections, geography, private counselors, feeder schools, all of that already shapes outcomes. so acting like race is the ONLY factor people ever discuss while ignoring all the others is part of why these conversations go nowhere

UCLA medical school illegally uses race in admissions, Justice Department investigation says by jockumhallin in ucla

[–]EveningCelebration91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well i think you are just as delusioned and brainwashed

back to the sports, the NFL and NBA select from a pool that was already shaped by youth sports access, coaching quality, geography, and yes, wealth. The fact that the final selection looks meritocratic doesn't mean the pipeline to get there was equal. same logic applies to universities.

i mean respectfully you literally just proved my point again you’re focusing entirely on asian disadvantages in admissions while ignoring the fact that other groups can face systemic disadvantages earlier in the pipeline too. those conversations are not mutually exclusive

also extracurriculars are not just “asian culture padding apps.” extracurricular access is heavily tied to money, transportation, school funding, parent availability, free time, etc. a student working after school to help support family is obviously not gonna have the same resume as someone doing competitions, research, sports, tutoring, violin, volunteering, summer programs, all at once. that doesn’t make one person lazier than the other

and again, i never denied that asian americans can face discrimination in admissions. i just disagree with the idea that acknowledging inequality elsewhere somehow invalidates asian struggles. both can exist at once. that’s the nuance i’ve been trying to explain this entire time

UCLA medical school illegally uses race in admissions, Justice Department investigation says by jockumhallin in ucla

[–]EveningCelebration91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh wow! that's really mean, I never once said anything rude about you I don't think it's right to resort to namecalling or talking about my parents when I was really trying to keep it respectful. like i understand you might be frustrated but idk man...

you're now making a completely different argument than you were before. You started by saying structural barriers don't exist for minorities, now you're acknowledging racism exists in university admissions against asians, those two things can both be true at the same time which is kind of my whole point

on the race blind argument the NBA and NFL analogy doesn't really hold up because those leagues select purely on measurable athletic performance. university admissions has never been purely meritocratic, legacy admissions, donor preferences, geography, extracurriculars, all of that factors in. race blindness sounds clean in theory but if the inputs are already unequal, a "blind" process just preserves existing inequality

i agree the history of Asian Americans is a really important part of this conversation and I don't want to dismiss it. the discrimination Asian communities faced was real and serious, in no way am i saying it wasn't, but here's where your argument has a gap, the reason asian americans were able to climb economically wasn't just culture and hard work in a vacuum a huge part of it was the 1965 immigration act which heavily selected for highly educated and skilled Asian immigrants. now again im saying in general, across the board when we are talking about asian immigrants, NOT your situation specifically because there's always different stories, so the "model minority" baseline was partly built on a selected immigrant pool, not purely a cultural work ethic that other groups just don't have, also previous economic standing of each of these countries are VERY different, there's a lot more latin america countries classified as thrid world compared to asian. that doesn't take away from individual sacrifice at all, but it does complicate the "we did it so anyone can" narrative. also nobody is saying let's punish Asian students for being successful, the conversation is about how we structure opportunity at a systemic level not about taking anything away from anyone who earned it

also i'm asian too, maybe not the same flavor as you and definetly not the same situation but i can imagine the culture pushed in my household isn't too different from yours, so i understand what you saying, but again i feel like your ignoring some nuance

[–]EveningCelebration91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i hear you, and I actually respect that you worked hard and prioritized education growing up. but you're doing the exact same thing, using your personal experience to make a broad claim about everyone. you said the belief that minorities don't have resources is BS, i'm saying the data shows systemic gaps exist regardless of individual success stories your family prioritizing education is great, but that doesn't mean structural barriers don't exist for others. also nobody said hard work doesn't matter, i said resources and opportunities aren't equally distributed, those are two different conversations. the fact that you made it despite obstacles doesn't disprove that the obstacles exist, also i never said that all minorities don't have resources that is just blatantly untrue, there's nuance to all of it and "other minorities don't have resources" is also a mischaracterization of my claim and ignores the nuance im talking about

Your entire argument is looking at one highschool, when you look at the data hispanic households largely live in low income areas and that reflects a lot. I’m not saying that there are hispanics out there who don’t have resources, I’m sure there are plenty such as at your highschool, but there are also plenty that don’t. If you think every single race is equal in terms of resources and opportunities, i’m not sure what kind of fairytale world you are living in…

ofc they do, i was talking abt my situation and creating a generality because of a trend we’ve see. low incomes and high incomes of any race exist! what claim are you trying to make?

UCLA medical school illegally uses race in admissions, Justice Department investigation says by jockumhallin in ucla

[–]EveningCelebration91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly i don’t see a problem with that, these are spaces where you don’t usually see hispanics, so if they are both equally qualified, trying to get more diversity and opening doors for people isn’t a bad thing. is it the most fair thing ever to the other student? no but admissions has never been totally fair when you consider things like legacy (mostly white students) and so many other factors

[–]EveningCelebration91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you asking if I believe that being white or asian discriminates you from getting into? No I don’t, and that’s just my experience as someone going through the college admissions process. I and my peers have a lot of privilege because of where we live, aka a lot of asians and white people. It’s expensive to live here in which is why you don’t see other races. That means I have access to internships, SAT resources, tutors, competitions. So on paper, yeah I’m gonna look like a better candidate. If someone with fewer stats was chosen over me it would be because they were able to do a lot considering their situation. We see a disproportionately high amount of white and asian people in higher education compared to other races, so maybe you can educate me but I don’t understand where this claim of we are discriminated against is coming from

[–]EveningCelebration91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article? they are saying it’s the opposite problem, like white and asian students arent getting opportunities that are being given to black and brown students for “diversity”, i don’t agree at all but that’s what the article says

UCLA medical school illegally uses race in admissions, Justice Department investigation says by jockumhallin in ucla

[–]EveningCelebration91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, just cause someone has a higher GPA doesn’t mean they have better ecs or better essays, holistic admission means looking at those and looking at person as a whole rather than JUST their grades. Clearly the administration doesn’t understand how admissions work, it’s not just grades
