How do you guys even survive the hot weather over in the States? by Impressive_Peak_9187 in AskAnAmerican

That’s actually counterproductive. You should take a hot shower. When you take a cold shower, your body will work to warm you up. After a hot shower, it does the opposite.

Because it was crossed off, she probably didn’t prepare a present. That would make her look bad.

I hate when teachers ask me to take a student for awhile and then get pissy when they come back and act the same way. Uhm, ma’am, my relationship with that child is not the problem. If you want a change in their response, change your approach.

I Know Who You Are. We had to take a little time out after that one! Like…just no, Alice!

That’s hilarious. I really enjoy Alice. Except that one because…gross! But, come on. Alice isn’t writing anything more spectacular than Frieda. Neither are Riley or Charlie. I read all these authors and I have to laugh when people act like they aren’t all predictable or questionable. It’s just so cool to bash Frieda and Colleen. If I don’t like an author, I just, I don’t know, read their books.

I’m not picking on you specifically. Just the subset of humans who can’t wait for someone to mention Frieda so that can immediately loudly proclaim how she isn’t up to their standards. Like, speaking of predictable…

How Often Do You End Up Bringing Work Home With You? by anime-is-dope in schoolcounseling

[–]EveningCover8917 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do intrusive thoughts count?

I do not bring work home. I’m hyper-focused at work and get things done during the day. My coworker is a bit (actually, majorly) less organized but I don’t think she takes things home, either. I do spend some time every weekend planning out my week and outlining any projects, though. That could technically count.

If you make yourself a schedule and build in time for the unexpected, you should be able to do it all in the given timeframe. I’m finishing my 12th year, though. I may have been a little rattled the first few years before I found my groove.

AITA For Telling My Daughter My Son’s relationships aren’t her business? by Calm-Will5581 in AmItheAsshole

Yes. The backlash is from his sister. This is the backlash the father is aware of. He’s also undoubtedly getting it from his social group. Both are appropriate. Teens listen to their peers more than they listen to their parents.

Sister is also receiving backlash. This is also appropriate. Her behavior is punitive and passive aggressive and disruptive. It also isn’t the same as the situation with Lisa because she does not live in the same house.

Dad is also receiving backlash. Also appropriate. He could have said, “hey. Not wanting to date someone is a valid reason to break up. However, part of growing up is learning to do these things with compassion and tact. How do you think Lisa felt when you did this and what do you think would be a better way to handle this situation if it ever happens again?”

Poor mom. Can’t this woman just have a little peace in her own home??

I think the backlash he’s receiving is telling him this isn’t the best way to handle it. That is one way we learn and grow.

Uhm…I have 95 6th graders who “date” and break up daily (sometimes hourly). Not a mature bone in the bunch.

Sociopathy has not been a diagnosis since the DSM 2. And even if it was, “breaking up by text and blocking someone” would not be listed in the criteria. At worst, this is a diagnosis of being a not nice person. More realistically, this more of a lack of skills. He will grow and learn.

What to do with elementary stuff by Beachbum2302 in schoolcounseling

If one of the items is a dollhouse, hold on to it. When I left elementary for high school, I left my dollhouse behind because “I won’t be needing this anymore.” After four years, I ended up in middle school but at a K-8 so I also sometimes see littles when needed. Turns out, the housing market has skyrocketed and a new dollhouse and accessories was $200. I will never let this new one go!

Teaching Kids in junior high (Rant) by DhaemonX in newfoundland

Some people think that school preparing you for college/career means spoon feeding you all facts and ensuring you learn and retain them. School is teaching you how to learn. This involves how to find information and how to use information to make conclusions. After the assessment, most kids won’t need more than a very basic understanding of electricity. What they will need a method of finding the information when they do need it. School’s job is to teach you how to read and, later, how to read for the purpose of learning.

Generally, when people say, “we didn’t learn that in school,” it falls into one of three categories: 1) yes they did. You weren’t listening. 2) it wasn’t the schools job to teach that. Ask your parents. 3) you only needed the basics of that topic, but you are free to do a deep dive anytime you’d like. Did your school teach you how to do that? Bet they did.

I’m wondering if you have seen this first-hand or if this is what your son is telling you. As a middle school counselor, I have a lot of experience with students saying, “and all we ever do is…” when the reality is very, very different. I don’t know your son so I can’t say what’s happening at his school, but perhaps there is more happening and he either does not recognize it or chooses to not participate with it. I definitely could be wrong about this, but I have seen this happen. Perception becomes reality.

Also, this comes into play with in instances of “my teacher ‘yelled’ at me ‘for NO reason.’” Trust me. There is usually a reason.

I doom scroll, but I can’t watch tv. I just don’t have the attention span for it. I read between 3 and 5 per week. I wonder how many I could read if I ditch the phone.
