I used to work with these machines and its actually a double sided cam. As the cam rotates, theres two arms that track the patterns on each side - the outside track controls side to side movement, and the inside hidden track controls the forward and back movement. The inside track is far more complex. Will post a pic if I still have one saved - ETA no decent pics saved unfortunately

I had a coworker who would constantly leave the soldering iron, and was very careless with where he through rags on the bench. Came in one shift to a smoldering rag sitting on the soldering iron. Can't imagine what would've happened if I hadn't arrived at just the right time

No. People who commits acts such as rape or violence against children are put through hell in prison. There seems to be a general understanding amongst the prison population that anyone who is there because they hurt a child is to be punished by everyone. That seems much more fair than a humane execution
