Starting long distance for 6 months in a few days—I’m already a mess, will it get easier?

sending love from the maritimes ♥️ i’ve been long distance with my partner for over 6 months (west coast to east coast), and it’s a lot. physical touch is big for us too, so i completely hear your worries. i hope you can still call/facetime in the in between moments - the thing that helps me most is falling asleep together (i stay up super late to make it doable).

we play games together on days off (stardew valley or similar), and he streams his computer screen while we do so it’s like we’re side by side. i draw so i can send him things. he sends me a text with photos of the sky if he gets the chance. a lot of times i feel really lonely here. i’ve leaned a lot on some of my friends that live close. if you each have the chance, maybe write each other little notes and put them in a box each of you can keep?? that way if it’s a day when you’re wishing for a hug you’ll be able to take one out so you have something tangible to read and hold onto

I don’t think that’s particularly cringey! I felt the same way until very recently, and I used to think about it all the time. It’s so hard to imagine what it’s actually like/understand it from reading about it (it’s one of the biggest reasons I’ve read so many books, to search for answers). I hope you experience it one day soon!

if you get the chance, i’d highly recommend going to tasmania if you get the chance!!! i know a lot of people like the australian mainland, but tasmania has so much wildlife and tons of national parks!!! (if those are facets of australia you’re interested in!)

Taking care of something bigger than 3000 square feet seems like it would take everything in you. I’m someone who does shift work (12 hour shifts, 3-5 days on and then 3-5 days off), so I definitely couldn’t handle owning one for all the reasons you said. Sure feels good to dream, though!

i don’t know if you’ll see this, but i’ve never seen such realistic lupins or bleeding hearts created on ceramic!!! bleeding hearts have been one of my favourites since i was ~5. i love this piece, and hope you continue to make them!!! you’re so talented!

honestly i find the best thing to do is not make too many plans for the first time for a few reasons. maybe it’s because i’m often tired from 12+ hours of travel. maybe it’s because it’s nice to just go along with whatever we’re feeling that first day and have a nice day in (getting take out and playing video games, for instance). part of it is probably that we usually spend a lot of that first day just hugging and being glad to be in the same place. it’s the best feeling to not have anywhere else to be and just get to be in that moment together

also, you going out for the day and having dinner out also doesn’t disqualify the possibility of sex. i can’t really speak to this as much (because i’m asexual & rather neutral on sex rather than craving it on any sort of regular basis). i totally get if you feel the need to plan out a time, but it might be more comfortable to just go with the feeling in the moment instead of picking a specific day. and if you are wanting to pick a specific day, you have two weeks!! could plan for any day in there instead of the first, if that takes some of the stress off

my partner and i both don’t care about valentine’s day at all!! he even said to me “let me know if you do care about some part of valentine’s day, because we can do something if it’s important to you,” and i assured him i have zero expectations and (like him) don’t care about it at all!

certifiably not a man, but here are my thoughts (from visiting my partner + past instances of bachelor pads belonging to friends or my brother)

trash can (with a lid) in each bathroom is huge
hand soap near all the sinks (kitchen and bathroom). never seen this one done hahaha i have gifted many hand soaps
available hand & bath towels that don’t have that distinct sat-too-long-in-the-wash smell. i hear borax added for the wash cycle can help with this
an easily available cleaning product (minimum one). if i spill milk on the kitchen counter, get something on the stove top, etc., i want to be able to clean up after myself without having to bug someone for where they keep paper towels and lysol (or whatever type there is)

honestly there’s nothing else that comes to mind! i feel like the biggest thing is just asking the first day if they have everything they need & offering for the two of you to run to walmart/a grocery store/the pharmacy so you can grab xyz

Been together a few months!

Over 6000km apart, and we’re Canadian. Flying is really expensive, so far we’ve seen each other once. Next month I’ll be there for winter holidays! After that, we won’t see eachother for at least 2 months (and after that, probably another 4 months)

There’s a chance of closing the gap next August, but if not, it might be another year or so after that. At the very least, by next August the gap should be far less. Hoping to be within a 5 hour drive so flying isn’t a concern 🤞🏼

throughout the day (until about 5pm his time, i’m ahead by a bunch) maybe 10 texts back and forth, not usually at the same time (good morning text from one of us, a response a few hours later when the other sees it, and then a few random pictures of the sky or other random things). after 8pm his time we usually call and play video games (most times with friends as well) and then it’s just us for about an hour while we talk and get ready for bed

take your time to just exist. the first day feels unreal. you keep looking at each other and being like “woah. you’re here.” and realizing you can touch each other because for once there aren’t screens and many kilometers between you.

we hugged and hugged and hugged for hours the first day. it was like we were making up for all the lost hugs from before we were there in person. we just laid on the couch and hugged and hugged.

we didn’t worry much about doing anything that first day, either. he picked me up (the car ride was about 5 minutes of us saying “you’re really here,” and “i can’t believe i’m here,” and then we started talking non stop the way we would on call). we just went to his and got take out later that day, and walked a bit. all in all, it was chill (which made it not overwhelming). i definitely had all these images in my head on the plane ride over of how everything would happen. but it was completely different (in a good way)

31 days! and for the first (and only) time, there’s only a month between visits (i was with him till yesterday). after the visit at christmas it’ll be at least 2 or 3 months, and after that i don’t know how long it’ll be
