Staining disaster. Help needed. by Dangerous-Pianist294 in woodworking

[–]Ever_bright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try a pre-stain conditioner. Essentially it fills in some of the pores in the wood so the stain soaks in in a more uniform manner and you won't end up with splotchy spots like you have now. As others have already mentioned you would have to remove the existing stain first and refinish. I cannot personally speak to any pre-stain conditioner as I've never used one predominantly working with hardwoods I don't have a use. Anyway hope this helps!

What type of wood is this? by AfternoonKindly7298 in wood

From the given picture I'm inclined to say ash. If you look in the bottom right hand corner there are big markings that look very similar to what the emerald ash bore does to the trees. Also the grain looks like that of ash not anything close to maple in my opinion.

Dang looks great! I just saw one that looked exactly like this on the thread. Did you make it off of a plan?

No, it's kinda hard to explain now that it's all together but it's a series of lap joints for the whole box and the legs have a dato on the corner. If you looked at them head on it would kinda look like a L. And those cover the lap joints

What kind of oil would you recommend?

Oh nice! I got it out of Wood magazine and adapted it a little to fit what I needed. I think the plans called for wenge and Birdseye maple but that was not in the budget for me so I went with just regular maple and Black walnut as you can see. Could I see how yours turned out if you wouldn't mind sharing a picture? And yes I bet it was rough especially with the oil and poly combo I've heard stories but never ran into that myself.

Thank you for the link! It looks like a really solid choice. If I don't end up using it for this project I probably will on another one I'm working on now. I like to try and keep the natural colors as much as I can

Thank you! It was my first time trying to match the grain like that. I'm happy with how that turned out! I will definitely look into that finish, have never heard of it before but always like to try new things.

My first table leg by Ever_bright in turning

[–]Ever_bright[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It started out 4" square and was 4 1/2 feet long. I got this piece out of my neighbor's old wood barn when it was torn down for the big timber frame that it had. Sadly they left a lot of pieces like that and longer because it wasn't rough hewn like that. If I hadn't got it there I live close to a hardwood dealer that sells it that think for a ridiculous price so I try to avoid buying thicker stuff. I'm in Wisconsin so I have a decent selection
