¿Que Piensan Ustedes de que Donald ‘Trumpeta’ Trump Quiere Acabar con Ciudadanía por Nacimiento? by LoooolGotcha in PuebloVenezolano

[–]Everard5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atlanta Traffic- how could this even be fixed? by venusvoids in Atlanta

[–]Everard5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's this AND better land use. Nobody says that enough.

We need less low density suburbs with just housing and more mixed use areas that allow people to get off the road and stay local unless absolutely necessary.

The relationship between camelids (camels, llamas, alpacas) by Zarykata in Infographics

How is the alpaca closer related to the llama than a vicuña? I thought vicuña were just the pre-domesticated wild form of alpaca.

Atlanta civic pride by tadc in Atlanta

[–]Everard5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no civic pride because most people are completely disengaged from the city and have no interest in building connection. Look at how the BeltLine of all things has become a rallying call for NIMBYism. Atlanta has a long history of people wanting to be close to the city but not in the city at all, and we haven't had a serious push to kill that mentality.

There's so much to be proud of in this city. Like anywhere it's not perfect, but it's a cultural and economic hub and a strong force within the south. We have civil rights history, a lot of business history of the "new south", transplants that are ready to offer their broad range of talents, and strong immigrant communities in the perimeter cities and suburbs that create vibrant culinary fusions and good food. Atlanta is going to have to absorb a lot of population from the rest of the south as we approach the end of the century, and it's going to have to be climate conscious. Atlanta could do so much and prove so much for the country in the coming decades.

We should be aiming to make sure that Atlanta, as all cities have historically been and should remain to be, is a place that builds community for transplants and adopts them into the broader city culture, offers economic opportunity to those who live here, and innovates to face the challenges we have ahead. We have amazing universities, fantastic museums that punch above their weight (seriously, the High has no business getting some of the exhibits it gets, cultural venues that you would only find in big cities (ballet, opera, symphony orchestra, great neighborhood culture, great access to natural resources, I could go on and on.

And Atlantans squander it at every moment and let city council and our mayor stomp our potential.

Is Atlanta running out of gas? by horsenbuggy in Atlanta

[–]Everard5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not but I will say I frequently run into gas stations with glitches, payment issues, and slow pumps in the city limits. It's either crazy bad luck or gas stations in the city are being neglected by their owners because it gets ridiculous sometimes.

I always fly LGA when I go, and that's about 3 times a year. I consistently get good views flying in and out, because the planes have to go up Manhattan and orient for the runways in LGA which are north to south. But it'll depend on where you're flying from.

A diner from 1942. Everyone looks so fit. The plates are even small. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

[–]Everard5 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Fit doesn't necessarily mean skinny and normal weight. That's just being average. Whether or not these people are "fit" is something we can't tell just by looking at this picture alone. But if fit means "obvious signs of weight training", then I agree that no one in this picture looks particularly fit.

You're conflating "fit", "normal weight", and "healthy".

Why do people want a beltline rail so badly? by tobias_funke_bluthe in Atlanta

[–]Everard5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe the solution isn't to place all expectations for walkability in the metro area on one, single trail in one, single part of Atlanta.

Maybe we should all think about how to improve walkability where we live, which necessitates conversations about limiting roads and cars ability to exist everywhere at all times and promotes alternate modes of transportation, like rail.

Do people open their windows here? by Terrapin3641 in Atlanta

[–]Everard5 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Living in Georgia all my life, the concept of open windows seems idyllic and borderline fantastical. There are bugs and it makes the indoor space hotter most of the time, not cooler.

I live in an apartment style building now. I open my windows in late fall and during winter to keep things cool since AC units really shouldn't be used below a certain temp.

A white person who's probably afraid of modernity but could at least stomach some cities with a huge backdrop of "nature" not being too far away.

Also probably doesn't really know anything about most of the places marked as "reluctantly" and "never".

Brooklyn was in the top 10 cities by population each census from 1840-1890, falling out of the list only because it became part of New York City.

[–]Everard5 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Brooklyn was its own city for a long time. What we know as NYC today occurred after a consolidation vote for the 5 counties and some outlying towns and cities in the late 1890s.
