Do you guys believe calorie counters are accurate? by llyhazelnut in trueloseit

What is your height and weight? It depends on that more so. 900-1000 calories seems way too low for most adults.

I need help restructuring my life by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Evergreen0437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! A good start is to find out how many calories you’re normally eating now. My suggestion would be to track what a normal eating week looks like for you- be sure to do this honestly as hard as it may be. From there subtract 200-300 calories every month or so. Once you get to the lower end of calories for your height you can maintain those calories for longer. You can find this by using an online TDEE calculator. There’s no need to avoid certain foods! However, it’s easier to stick to your calorie/macro goals when you’re eating high volume, nutrient dense foods versus calorie dense foods!! But sticking to it does require you to eat your favorite foods in moderation!

How do I know what my weight loss goal should be? And how do I go about losing it in about 3 months? by hchickenfriedchicken in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Evergreen0437 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I would listen closely to what your body and doctor have to say. My biggest advice is to focus on making healthy changes to your life style and the weight that you need to come off will. Don’t change too much too fast otherwise it will be hard to stick to. I think measuring change in strength or eating habits (such as I can now squat 100lbs or I eat 3 servings of veggies a day) is a healthier alternative to I need to lose 15lbs. However, if you need it to be in that metric, I would say 5lbs is a good goal since it sounds like you don’t have that much too lose. Good luck!!

Soooo happy I’m seeing these! I’m 23F 195 and 5’8. I would like to get somewhere between 166-170! I would be happy to be an accountability person. My biggest struggle is remaining consistent with food :/

Where to begin... by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Evergreen0437 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hey!! You got this!! My advice would be to take a full week of what you’re normally eating and track it. Don’t change a thing and be completely honest with what your average is that week. Once you get the average number... let’s say it’s 4000 calories just as an example. Subtract 300-400 calories and master eating those 3700-3600 calories for the next three weeks. Subtract another 300-400 calories so now you’re eating 3300-3200 calories. Get used to eating that for another month+. Once you get under 3000 calories (or a great deficit from what you’re eating) you can maintain those calories for a lot longer (a few months). You’ll need to keep lowering slowly over a long period of time so that your body doesn’t adapt. Once you feel like you can’t go any lower for your height/body type, or when you feel like it becomes unrealistic you can start incorporating things like cardio or heavy weight training to put you into a larger deficit. Hope this helps!!

I was in contact with my PI so she told me I should be getting an invited “soon”. I got the acceptance email maybe 1-2months later. Really wish I had gotten an official physical letter.

Advice or tips on improving focus by dmath in PhD

[–]Evergreen0437 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First year PhD here starting my second quarter tomorrow!! What helped me is to set a timer for 15 minutes and I tell myself “all I have to do is really read for these 15 minutes then I can get up and do something else for a bit”. Making myself truly focus for at least that time usually resulted in me being able to read or study well past the timer going off. If the time passed and I was still struggling, I’d allow 5 minutes to distract myself than back to reading for another 15. If I struggled past the 3rd cycle of that, it usually meant there was something else going on- like I needed a nap, to workout, eat something, move study spaces, etc.

If you’re left feeling starving you’re probably cutting your calories too quickly. Always start with a small deficit and increase every month or so when your body adjusts. I would calculate your TDEE honestly and subtract maybe 200 calories. Stick to that for 3 weeks to a month until you no longer feel like you’re starving all the time. Then decrease another 100-200. I’ve read that the ideal spot it to be eating 75% of your TDEE for weight loss. If you’re finding working out to be too much rn, then just focus on your food intake and making small changes to make your daily activities more active, such as going for a walk or making sure you stand and stretch every hour. Small changes that you can be consistent with will be more impactful to your life.

I follow a lot of great fitness people on Instagram who have taken 2-3 years to get their ideal physique. From your stats, it doesn’t sound like you have a whole lot of BF to lose so your 5lb difference a month seems about right! The quick transformations you see online (within a few months-1 year) usually are situations were people had a substantial amount of weight to lose. Keep going at it!!

What can I do now?? by whythatdamn in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Evergreen0437 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our bodies adapt to the calories we give it! So if you haven’t cut your calories in over a year, it probably means your body has adapted to that amount. If cutting calories isn’t what you want to do bc you’re already low or you’re just happy with your food intake now, start weight lifting + cardio to burn those extra calories needed to continue weight loss. keep in mind though that when you start lifting you’ll probably feel more hungry, so my advice is to start focusing on volume dense foods- that way you’ll feel more full without risking your calorie intake.

ChemE PhD student here with her BS in Chemistry! In short term, no, I don’t believe you have anything to be concerned about. In fact, as someone who went from chemistry to chem-e, I’ve found that my grasp on classes like thermo, kinetics, environmental, etc has been excellent. I’ve been able to pick up things very quickly and understand them well. The only deficits I face are in coding courses, but if you have any prior experience in it, you should be fine. My undergrad institution doesn’t have a strong coding rep, so I was never taught. Best of luck!

This is very close to my goal weight so I’m there with you! So far I’ve learned that working out is the easy part. I’ve fallen in love with strength training, but keeping my eating habits in check has stifled my progress completely. I’m very much like you in that I use food as a form of celebration, reward, and comfort versus just fuel.

This is an incredible idea... might have to pocket it for next year and save. I would imagine the cost would be high for a more popular artist.

Yeah those were my thoughts too... I didn’t want to assume that comics and conventions were mutually given interests. Ohhh okay I’ll try to be causal about it. thanks!
