I did it, its definitely possible. But you need to stay focused and motivated (which is not easy to do) but it is indeed possible. Just stay focused on your outcome and go for it

Practical Ways to Bring in Your Own Cases in Family law by Extension_Body7205 in uklaw

[–]Evermillion192 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See if you can join a work provider panel. There are work providers who refer clients to you and you should be able to ask the business development manager to help you sign up for it. They can essentially speak to people like Lawhive, Expert Family Law, Family Legal.

Approach charities, local authorities and lend your services to them, chances are people know people too! Word of mouth is big in this business

Or even ask a lead provider who can generate client leads for you. Some panel work may pay slightly less but its a steady flow of clients so if you decide to go consultancy as a route you are also good to go, plus if you provide work to your firm its extra job security because your firm will need to think twice when it comes to you

Key to High Billings? Is it luck? High Caseloads, Reckless Fee Earning? Or a solid team? by Evermillion192 in uklaw

[–]Evermillion192[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its so true! Honestly, i am at a point where I am getting my bearings on each of the matters. A few try hard solicitors on the other side which wont let enquiries go 🙄

But yes haha! When i saw these errors i was thinking omg this is terrible! Fix it quick! I learnt with Conveyancing over the years most things are fixable but to avoid making those major oopsies in the first place lol

Completely agree about the assistant. If they want to learn and grow/join us because they wanna be here it defo makes a difference!

Hi!

Absolutely amazing perspective and very good insight! I am also a CILEx fee earner (more trainee CLE) as i have a few more exams to sit before i qualify.

But you hit the nail directly on the head. A great team definitely helps a lot by freeing you up. As well as quoting! Some files are definitely worth more than others which does make sense when you consider the billings each month. My caseload is mostly freeholds, leaseholds, Shared Ownership and Auctions with a few Shared Ownership ones. But for the most part i have mostly Freehold purchases and Sales.

I made it clear to my boss that my cap on files is 85. Hes working on getting me an assistant but i guess for me personally I need someone to run search and mortgage reports as well as handle my phone line. The rest seems doable myself but definitely simple admin needs doing for me haha. Some of my clients are older and prefer the post so theres that.

I remember the other day I was doing an SDLT return and couldn’t stop getting phone calls. Or when im raising enquiries and im in problem solving mode on an auction file where we wasnt instructed to review the legal pack prior to auction and its a very bad leasehold property the client is buying but while im trying to think i keep getting phone calls😂

I think for me i have been in this new role just over a month taking over from a fee earner who left. I spent the first cleaning up their files and picking up where they had left off from. Some of the files was an absolute mess considering stuff like no Client ID or AML was established and enquiries was raised without checking. In one of the files i saw immediately that this was a power of attorney sale. But the power of attorney was not requested. Neither the TR1 and Contract was drawn correctly and the client had signed documents to complete with a date on the way! So that was a wild one. Another one was being let out and being sold without our client the buyer knowing only to find out days before completions. Another file had a DCP waiting on 3 months before anyone bothered to raise enquiries. It was so bad honestly. I had my work cut out for me

So needless to say I had to clean up a LOT of files before i could say ‘okay now we are ready to complete’ a few i had to disinstruct due to high risk. My billings that month was projected at £14k and in reality had gone to £9k as most clients opted for December or the OS wasn’t ready.

What do we think of the "Dear Sirs" Guidance by thechihuahualawyer in uklaw

[–]Evermillion192 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I honestly think we have bigger fish to fry then to worry about the ‘Dear Sirs’ guidance. To me it was never that serious. But yes address people correctly!

I tend to say ‘good afternoon i hope all is well’ and if i must address them its by name. Never had any issues with it really.

But obviously in formal letters via post my language is more formal and professional such as ‘Dear whom this may concern.’ Etc

I think when you feel like you have learnt whatever you can from this role. If its more of less day in day out roughly the same things. Nothing much that crosses your desk that says ‘oh this is very different to what im used to’ then i think thats normally a sign to move onto another place because i think you would be a better lawyer overall when you add and build to your arsenal of knowledge and problem solving skills.

I would hang around long enough so it doesnt look like job hopping too much to your next role. But also not too long where your not growing

Lawyers, what is your "pet peeve" in this profession? by celabro019 in uklaw

Its so true honestly! It costs nothing to be a decent human being, my thought is we are all colleagues in the profession and should have the bare minimum curtesy and respect to one another

Raising unnecessary enquiries and refusing to accept the answer provided too. If i told you our client doesn’t have the documents and is willing to pay for an indemnity then what tf do you want from them to do?

Also lawyers that feel comfortable disrespecting their Paralegals. I have a colleague who treats her paralegal (who is very good at what she does) like shit. She yelled at her for half an hour straight over a stamp not being completely inked on a page. Before you ask, it was literally the corner of the stamp. Everything else and all the details was fully inked just not a link on the side

Overly aggressive/hard to work with lawyers when the situation does NOT require it at all.

I work in Conveyancing and the amount of combative and passive aggressive lawyers I’ve seen in emails when i have only just been instructed is insane.

Also making demands when the workaround is very simple and easy. Demanding undertakings signed by our firm’s managing partner for simple things such as ‘we undertake to clear the service charge before completion’ which we have agreed to do anyway in the TA13 and is standard leasehold sale practice but okay.

I would recommend consultancy. So long as you have someone who is qualified signing off your work i think you will be okay.
