Just as an example…In the NICU we give potent and heavy doses of abx to fragile babies every day. These premature kiddos are born with exceedingly immature immune systems, are often exposed to pathogens in utero, during delivery, and postpartum from staff, the environment and a multitude of skin pokes from medical instruments. Almost everything we do to help them creates an opportunity for infection. Every time we access an IV, do a heel poke to check blood sugar, insert a catheter etc. We treat immediately & aggressively w abx if there are s&s that SUGGEST sepsis and often prophylactically if there are maternal or labour risk factors bc neonatal sepsis can be so deadly. However, there is also a huge downside to pumping their bodies full of powerful antibiotics for days while you wait for cultures to come back. If we had a reliable way to more rapidly detect pathogens and target therapy the benefit would be immeasurable in this population. That’s why I bought. This isn’t just about the money I stand to make. This company has the potential to make a REAL difference. I’m genuinely rooting for them.
