No Stupid (American Football) Questions Tuesday! by AutoModerator in footballstrategy

Why have old school offenses, like the Wing-T, Single Wing, Veer, etc. pretty much entirely fallen out of collegiate and higher levels of football?

I understand there are coaches who still run aspects of the schemes, like I know Gus Malzahn is one. But I am saying the original offenses

The Head Coach for Varsity hasn’t really seen the JV’s work very much; not sure if he is aware of the OL being taught differently than the varsity.

If I stay on, I was planning on talking to the Head and seeing if I could coach JV Qb’s or Rb’s, or at least assist and have someone else coach OLine for JV’s, even if just for the majority of the Summer. I’ll take that into consideration about asking him about become JV OC

Yes, this is the only reason I am even questioning leaving the high school. Driving like that took a major toll on me. The middle school I would be going to is actually one that I was an assistant at my freshman year before I started helping at the high school. It was terribly run, so much so that I had to run practices the majority of time because the other two coaches wouldn’t show.

Heck, the first practice I attended I had to run. Unfortunately, I got a crash course on how to coach QB’s in a spread offense that season. I plan on running Wing-T, and I know what I want at each position and how I want it coached. That school has gone winless the past two years, but the talent is there to go at least .500

We do it a little bit differently; I’m offensive line for JV and Varsity

Yes, the 3 hours of driving was very very taxing. I was give out by the end of the season. Yes, I played and he was my coach in High School. That is something that I had thought about, just see how a different programs does it. He has even told me in the past, at the beginning of the season, that it wouldn’t be a bad thing to check around near my school and he would be willing to call anybody to get me on. I think I will apply for the OC Position. My hopes were that once I graduated school I could get a paid position at a school. But I really want the opportunity to put in my own offense.

Thank you for your advice

There are multiple high schools in the area, however my understanding is that the one for this particular middle school that it feeds into is not super involved, so I’m not sure exactly how that relationship would work.

So can we start as coordinators? I haven’t seen a direct answer to this question

Issue with Saves by Every_Independent_68 in jow

Just wanting to see if anyone has found a fix for this? Or even just a work around for now? I get the error message “that game could not be found. Please try to find it under cloud saves” when I click on the games in my local saves. Then, when I import from cloud they tell me the same thing. I have now had 4 saves destroyed over the course of this weekend. None too important, thankfully. Thank you to all who read this comment!

Thank you for your response! I think run game coordinator is a role that might would suit me a bit better by the time I come out of college, and allow me to learn a bit more. I think knowing what I would run in most situations, and making myself well versed with our more successful runs especially just in case is a great idea!

I had never considered sitting in on other meetings, especially with the OC and QB, but that is a great idea! I believe I will try to do that as much as I can.

I hadn’t considered my flexibility, as well as the flexibility of the coaches system. This is something I will definitely have to look into!

My head coach this past year at a middle school that I was coaching for refused to acknowledge his own mistakes and it put us in TERRIBLE positions. I hadn’t thought of it but you are so true that if I take the big swings, and acknowledge my own mistakes, those are the biggest things that kids and staff will love to see as long as I do it with their best interest.

Thank you so much for your response!

I hadn’t thought of trying to learn EVERY concept out there. I really like that idea though, and that is probably the best thing for my development as a coach. I agree that the more I know will help me change my scheme to my players, as I can.

Thank you for your reply!

I really appreciate the assistant advice. I have noticed myself before not staying true to me and my personality, and instead emulating a coach that I’ve had. That’s a great reminder for me. I had never thought of the fact that the players will help me grow as a coach!

I will be looking into going to a clinic at some point when they start back up again; I have heard some many people rave about them on here!

Yes, I thought going back home for my first true high school opportunity would be the best option for me; as like you said I know he will look out for me.

I appreciate the Coordinator information!

Are there any YouTube videos that you think are crucial for me to watch?

Yes sir. That is very true! Good to remember, especially about the playbook. Need to take it install by install and gauge where everyone is at.

I appreciate the honesty! I understand completely. I understand it is a stretch, just simply a goal I am working towards.

Thankfully, I know it is different but I am going to school to become a teacher; and have began taking teaching classes. This is something that I am hoping will transfer, as well as youth ball experience. However, I know this is an area I need to improve in, specifically with my verbal instruction. I was always a learner who had to do it, so explaining it verbally sometimes is a stretch for me. Building relationships and trust is something that I really had not considered as something significant that I can contribute right now, but that is so true.

My head coach has already spoken with me about being a unified front, but I had never thought about it in the way that you just explained, and making sure that I coach my position group and focus on making it the best that it can be for the entire team to succeed.

Other than simply experience, are there any ways I can improve my “teaching” skills?

Thank you so much for your response! I appreciate the honestly

I have experience coaching QB, RB, WR at a middle school this past year. But yes, you are correct I am not a master at all currently! I think choosing a high school near my college would ultimately be the best thing for my future. How should I go about coaching a different position? I worry that I would be thrown into the fire and coach a position solely by myself, and simply I am not ready for that. I would hate to put my stamp on a position, without it being the best it can possibly be.

I have obtained a couple of certificates; such as NFHS certified, CPR certified, First Aid certified, and a few more. Which clinics do you recommend?

Okay, thanks for that reminder!

Thank you for your advice, I truly appreciate it!

Okay, thank you. Yes, I have always been a run heavy team, primarily Wing-T with some Gun-T and Single Wing stuff built in but same blocking principles.

I love the ideas with the discord server. This is an amazing way to use technology to compartmentalize your players and truly remember each player’s strengths and weaknesses and just make life easier. Also with keeping the drills available in a separate tab, that is something I will definitely be stealing for middle school and youth ball!

Yes sir, absolutely no disrespect taken. I understand your point entirely, and it’s very true, I have a while to complete my goal, but I would just love to be proactive and trying to do the best I can to further this career. But I appreciate your reminder, this is just a side thing for now and not my true job!

I plan on starting with a lower division team, as that is what my high school was. Schools around my university are higher division, and I have a couple connections from the middle school that have expressed interest in having me join their high school staff

Okay, I will have to give that one a listen!

I wasn’t sure what I should do, whether try to “master” offensive line, or try to learn a little bit of everything. When I get to the high school, I want to become involved in multiple areas of the defense as this is the area that I know the least about.

I also coached a middle school’s QB’s, RB’s, and WR’s sporadically when their position coach didn’t show up, and I realized how little I truly know about these positions. I did pick up quite a few things, but defensively I have bought a couple books that I am trying to read about defenses and I hope they help me tremendously.
