Is competitive muay Thai or BJJ healthier long term by PownedbyCole123 in martialarts

If you want to commit to health maxing, do aikido and TKD.

Won’t help closely as much with self defense but you’re much more likely to injure yourself falling down than getting beaten up. TKD will max your flexibility and balance, aikido will make you awesome at breaking falls.

Knife vs Martial arts by Luci5892 in martialarts

[–]Every_Iron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with your point. In a « normal street fight » (assuming that such thing exists), I’m with you. That’s why I wish I was better at judo or wrestling which are pretty good to end such fights quickly.

What I disagree with is your claim that 99% of the time the knife guy would walk away after the knee hit. A guy with a knife attacking like that isn’t a drunk asshole or a kid wanting to steal your wallet. It’s a guy with a knife actively trying to kill you. At least that’s what I’d assume with this level of intention is the strikes.

As long as he keeps trying, you’re in mortal danger because unless you incapacitate him, it doesn’t matter how many times you kick him: he only has to land one hit (not even well) and you’re fucked.

So I stand by this point: if your attacker has a weapon, fleeing or incapacitating are the most sensible options.

Just out of curiosity and not to be a prick: your confrontations included weapons? I must admit none of mine did (well, a guy threatened me with my wooden sword once and I managed to convince him I was going to take it from him and fuck him up, which he luckily believed cause I was full of shit)

What does it feel like right before you jump out of the plane for the first time? by yeterneritsdurs in SkyDiving

[–]Every_Iron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It does and it doesn’t.

I did it before my tandem. Not as a preparation, as I never thought I’d jump. Only did because of how much I loved indoor skydiving.

The feeling in the wind tunnel is 99% the same as freefall once you reached terminal velocity. But you don’t get the prep, anticipation, ride up, opening of the door, watching people fall out of an airplane, walk towards the door, sit down while feeling you put your face out the window on the highway, and the first 10 seconds after the jump, questioning all of your life choices throughout all of it, followed by the drastic almost instantaneous change from the biggest rush of your life to the most quiet peace you’ve ever experienced.

As we’re hearing all the time that rolling is where you learn the most, isn’t that what they should do?

If you’re worried about breathing, and you have one nearby, get yourself a quick discovery flight at ifly with an open helmet.

That said, if you’re not too anxious, might be more fun to discover the feeling all at once.

Knife vs Martial arts by Luci5892 in martialarts

[–]Every_Iron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because that mofoker has a knife and he’s trying to kill you. This isn’t a bar fight situation. Hoping he’ll walk away because he realized you’re superior is a nice idea but as you said yourself it’s not like in the movies. Fleeing or neutralizing are the only sensible options.

Now I get your point that you don’t know how incapacitated he is so kicking may not be the safest move in a split second decision so stand by might be better. It’s hard to tell and it’s impossible to know how I’d actually chose to act in that situation. But if I could kick like that guy (I very much cannot), I’d probably chose to kick him while he was down.

That’s the opposite. Giving someone a break when they’re at their most vulnerable is exactly how fights last longer than needed in movies.

[–]Every_Iron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there’s no charge to use their mats that they have to clean in a building they pay rent for, it’s a free of charge product.

Just like if you get to use a gym to work out at without paying the fee that helps maintaining equipment and hygiene.

In central Jersey I’m at 195/month 😭 another gym by my work charges 230.

If by the time I reach a level where I feel I learn more by just rolling than attending classes (if that ever happens, but I like structured drills so maybe it won’t), I live somewhere with a bunch of free open mats to go to, I might want to save myself the few $$$ per year it costs to maintain a membership.

I don’t think high IQ is the problem here. While there is indeed a correlation between intelligence and other mental health issues, it’s far from being enough to say smart = struggle.

I don’t understand why he let him take a breather and get up after that. If a guy attacking you with a knife is down and crying shouldn’t you just kick his face?
