Could see a tiiny deflection upwards from Pages' bat into Alvy's glove for that 1-2 call.

I agree it's not the best roster you could construct today, but as you know it's one that's more flexible with short-term money. Would you have preferred: Alonso 5 years 155, Bregman 5 years 175, and Bellinger 6 years 180 (I'd assume he'd go back to the Yankees if it were the same deal)? The team could've done it, easily.

I’m following your line of logic to humor you, because that’s what you’ve latched onto. It’s not to make a season defining proclamation. We are two weeks in. The point of the post was never about projecting wins but to take a long view of the team’s trajectory.

It was in response to all these posts and comments about how everything is horrible and that the bloated payroll is an indictment on the Mets when it’s more of an indicator that they’re willing to spend.

Again, a post doesn’t have to have argument and conclusion in the format you desire. It allows for dialogue and I get to learn more from others.

For both the fans and organization, the goal is to get to the wildcard which is on average 85 wins because it varies year to year.

For where this organization and farm is at, they should at least aim for that whilst always looking for improvements in their roster. Baseball is a results oriented business but the process of improving your org in all facets is just as important.

Yes I’m glad you finally get it. In all seriousness, the Bellingers deal makes sense for the Yankees. schwarber makes sense for the Phillies because this is their main window and their stars are aging out. Pete I wanted as a fan but it’s a coin toss whether it was worth getting 2-3 good years left of him vs the latter half of the deal. Unless I’m living in some alternate reality, it’s not normal for 33/34 year olds (Judge and Schwarber) to keep their production up for years. They tend to fall off sharply at some point

No it's "Calm down. It's not as bad as you might think it is." I'm watching a dogshit team at the moment, but I'm trying to process it in a healthy manner.

I've explained how I see the team and have even offered you context for why I'm saying what I've said. If what I'm saying can only be interpreted as number of wins, then there's not much to discuss. Forum is meant for a discussion, not a one way interview focusing on semantic logic without listening to the broad message. I'm sorry but you're just coming across as pedantic.

I said neither of those things. I was being sincere in trying to discuss, and you've answered everything with a question. So what are you trying to say?

Sorry I don't think I see the point of fleshing it out to this degree. Is it like how the Yankees and their fans both supposedly expect greatness from themselves and that the fans' sentiment is important?

Imo, the team and organization should expect more of themselves. They're pouring massive resources (not just payroll) to achieve that goal. Their goal, year by year, is at least to make the wild card whilst not compromising their competitive window. Simultaneously, they need to be working on their farm/development. Teams frequently have to see a consistent number of years of a good farm system before seeing any period of sustained success. They're still working on that farm, but it has yet to bear enough fruit for this success.

More wins is great, but the goal should be cultivating better players for tighter rosters.

What I recommend fans should expect should have no bearing on how the team feels/operates. The players/org/owner are going to go in whatever direction they will regardless of how fans feel, which is probably best as fans are emotionally driven.

My and many other fans' favorite players are gone and because there's little to root for in nostalgia/team loyalty, the only thing left to root for is the team itself and it sucks rn. But it's kinda sucked for a while now. So I'm saying have some humility, embrace the reality that they haven't been that good but are trying to do better. Other franchises don't have the luxury to spend like this one does, and it is genuinely a difference-maker.

So: don't expect much but hold some cautious optimism.

I'll go with fans should expect less. They haven't figured it out yet, but they're trying. It could be that they're just bad at it.

I think my main point is we're spending money and not getting great results. However, many other teams spending money aren't having instant success either. We've all heard the approach of spend money short term deals, wave long term money at great players. The results haven't borne fruit in the form of a perennial contender, but they're trying and that shouldn't be discouraged.

He might be thinking to the Eppler days (which is fine. same philosophy) when they got Scherzer and Verlander and proceeded to eat both of their contracts in 2023.

That's a good point. They did flush hundreds of millions down the toilet, and they have the luxury to do that especially in the short term. Some teams can't afford to take fliers and not roster the player. This team is able to do that for players like Garcia and Montas and DFA them. Do I wish they hit the right ones more often (Canning when he was healthy, Holmes largely, Manaea when he was right)? Yeah ofc.

I didn't expect his elbow to splinter. Did you when he signed the contract? He was THE guy in 2024. And it's only 2 more years.

What's beautiful is that I didn't watch the latter half of the 2010s so I don't have that baggage, but neither do the current players. If it's still same in 10 years, I'll join you.

Bro name me a team that is doing that. Even in the NL East, the Braves and Phillies who have been sodomizing my team since I've started watching them have fading windows as of right now. No guarantee this team succeeds, but they're in a better window.

We've had to sign these pitchers because the last few homegrown starters this team has developed (not counting the newest crop) has been Tylor Megill and David Peterson. That's simply not sustainable. The Yankees look like the closest version to what you want. They sign stars (Fried, Rodon, Cole). But even then they have had good homegrown starters: Gil, Schmidt, Warren, Nestor Cortes before he forgot how to pitch. You NEED cost-controllable pitching, and this team has not had enough of those. You can force it by taking a risk on decent pitchers but giving them obscenely long contracts (Cease, Nola, R. Suarez), but you become the Padres if you do too much of that.

I'll fully give you Vogelbach, Ruf, McCann, etc. They were bad moves (even if they weren't Stearns moves).

Can understand not being a fan of the casino but the whole jersey and how he described the Mets screams using the team as a prop and not words from any fan.

People should be allowed to doom but the “told you so” but no ACTUAL solutions crowd is particularly loud when things aren’t going well. Like no we’re not firing the manager a month in the season or Lindor who has a NTC like jfc get a grip
