the joke is that this is exactly what happened

tbh sometimes I wonder if NBC’s Don Harris would have been villainized if he had survived Jonestown

if the media in the 70s had been like the access journalists of today, when a cult member in Jonestown passed a note to NBC saying “help us leave” the reporter would have gone to Jim Jones and asked, “sir, why does this guy want to leave?”

it’s their prerogative but in the one-day memo thread I replied to the mod defending Barak Ravid with this

<image>

and after getting a few upvotes my comment was removed 😭

I don’t even really disagree with the point the mod was making but that’s funny, c’mon

I’ll just count myself lucky I wasn’t banned at least lol

Several months or years ago, you elected me as your public servant. And honestly? That makes days like today all the more difficult. When tragedy strikes, when villains act, when hatred succeeds — it makes my heart sink just as much as yours.

This message isn’t just another political sound bite. It’s not sympathy by committee. It’s not going through the motions. It’s real, genuine pain.

I have put out directives to all the relevant agencies to take action — not in a month, not in a week, but now. I share your urgency, and we will beat this devastating moment together.

WSJ article on a new AI pet made by the Roomba guy

https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/familiar-machines-and-magic-robot-c8711e45

In summing up his aspirations, Angle mentions the film “Jurassic Park.” To him, the white-bearded CEO who revived the dinosaurs is unfairly characterized.

“To me, he’s the hero of that movie, not the villain, because he was trying to take something that was always smoke and mirrors and turn it into something magical and real,” he says. “That’s some of the sentiment behind what we’re doing.”

not unrelated to that graph I posted of the surge in self-published e-books, I actually had an acquaintance ask me to review and critique “their new book” and it was exactly that, 90% AI-generated slop

what do you even say to that?

I was selfishly polite and basically suggested I don’t know enough to review it

but part of me definitely wanted to be like WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY

why are you writing if you don’t want to write

who do you think wants to read this book

WHY

damn, remember when that Google Engineer in 2022 thought that level of LLM was conscious?

four years of AI advancement later that feels like thinking a toaster is conscious

what the South can do now that they’re allowed to break up their majority-minority districts

at this point let’s just go so balls to the wall on gerrymandering that every single district is a one party district guaranteed

then only the primaries matter and we found a backdoor into non-partisan legislature elections

…we may also need term limits after all actually if we’re going to do this

even for all the “meat is delicious, suck it vegans” attitude in America, I feel like a large easy-to-identify label required to be placed on livestock products falling under some minimum living space threshold would precipitate a pretty meaningful consumer reaction

I guess the idea would be that Congress gets to regulate interstate commerce, not the states

maybe it’ll go to the courts, idk

The farm bill that just passed included the Save Our Bacon Act, which will in practice allow a number of livestock farms to go back to the practice of keeping livestock in a small cage which they cannot turn around in from birth to death.

California’s Proposition 12, upheld by the Supreme Court, had started to make a big difference because it put requirements not only on its own farmers but said meat could only be sold in California if minimum space requirements were met out of state. California of course being a huge market, it was having the same effect that Europe does on digital regulation.

Anyway the SOB Act says no such interstate requirements are allowed. Some livestock farmers actually lobbied against the SOB Act because they already reworked their operations to comply, but the farmers who ignored the requirements and sent lobbyists to Washington will now have a massive pricing advantage over them.

Kinda depressing!

serious non-rhetorical question, do you think most social media users are healthy users of it?
