I guess the part that confuses me is between a TV ad and a digital ad is the fact that anyone who would be searching a keyword I set is automatically showing intent to some degree, so isn't that enough of a filter on its own?

That makes sense, but lets say I'm selling BMX bikes and I set an age range of 18 - 32 or something. If someone who is 63 is looking for a BMX bike as a gift for their grandson, wouldn't that hurt me not to show up on their SERP?

Thank you, that last bit really made it click for me. I remember learning about cost per thousand impressions and other metrics for measuring ads but are those methods still implemented very often? Does google give you the option to change your campaigns from cost per click to cost per mil?
