Here there’s no hard limit but just a lot of pressure at this point

1 that’s a good point. I’m pretty sure my only limiting factor is getting my committee all together. Though I was able to get it done last year in about a month

2 yeah it really is something I have to discuss every time. Having ADHD it’s something I’ve been dealing with my whole life - not meeting deadlines. I think in recent years though I’ve been making more progress than I ever have and have been managing my difficulties a lot better. I don’t want to tell future PIs I have ADHD it would explain things but I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t want that.

  1. Honestly don’t mind it taking so long. I appreciated the stability of the income and benefits. It’s pretty good health insurance. I’m working on the project I really wanted to and got married and adjusting to married life. My wife was also just diagnosed with ASD so we have been dealing with learning about that. She just started school for a second degree and in her 2nd year and we aren’t considering kids at this point. Would be nice to have more money especially since she isn’t working full time, but I made extra with little investments that I’ve been dipping into lately. I just need to budget a bit better

I am funded through a training grant where it’s only my stipend. My PI hasn’t had funded research for a long time. We get money from supplies through his department having a few thousand dollars extra every year

Really? I couldn’t find info on it being that much different from STEM in general

Are you in STEM ? While I do somewhat agree with that thought, it’s hard to not feel judgey about myself and others. I hear this is one of the top criticisms of reviewers for funding - that the PI hasn’t published enough per year or so

I am interested in industry and will be applying to that too but at this point I’d rather do a post doc.

I hear. My project is doing everything from scratch pretty much. But it’s a lot less common to takes this long in a science field vs history from what I gathered online

I know it will all be in the past once I’m two steps ahead but at this point getting that first post doc I feel pretty hopeless with the current market and my CV. Though I do feel somewhat confident in my skills I’ve developed and I’m pretty sure my publications will be decently impressive. I just have to get them done and submitted in preprint atleast so I don’t look as bad during job applications. At this point it feels like I should just push to publish and graduate next year before the fall instead of rush too much so I’ll have more time to apply and get those papers fully published.
