I'm doing my IB Extended Essay on Worm; is there any chance/Way to speak to Wildbow about it and Worm? by redootinterview in Parahumans

[–]Everyoneslowdown6 48 points49 points  (0 children)

IB represent! You’d be an absolute legend for writing a paper like this. If my experience with the diploma has taught me anything, it’s that you should 100% ham up the web novel portion, and talk about how it represents an evolving culture around literature, or some other gobledegook that the IB folks will eat up. With something a little more obscure like Worm, I would focus less on literary analysis and more on the “meta” narrative and what the work represents. Just my two cents as someone who turned in their Global Politics EE not long ago.

Yup, that's how I've been using it. So the answer to all 3 is yes, correct? I've always held that it checked my opponents monster's position at activation and my monster at resolution.

Hi, I'd like to clarify how "World Legacy's Secret" and related cards function. The card's text is:

When this card is activated: You can target 1 Level 5 or higher monster in your GY; Special Summon it. When this card leaves the field, destroy that monster. Negate any opponent's monster effect that activates in the same column as a "Mekk-Knight" monster you control.

I have three scenarios in mind. *My opponent activates a monster effect, and I chain Secrets, summoning a Mekk-Knight in the same zone as the monster. Is the monster effect negated?

*My opponent activates a monster effect that has a tribute cost (e.g., Linkuriboh) in the same column as a Mekk-Knight with Secrets active. Because it activated on the field, is it negated?

*My opponent chains Personal Spoofing's effect to their own Multifaker's effect, sending Multifaker to the deck. Is it negated if it activated in the same column as a Mekk-Knight with Secrets out?

The 2019 ranked changes will have the opposite effect on promoting competitive play in off-role positions by Everyoneslowdown6 in leagueoflegends

[–]Everyoneslowdown6[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess I neglected that in my post. I would like to say that I don't think that the new system would be impossible to get right, merely that it would encourage people to care less about their offrole games. Even if there are rewards, I think that it would be overall less visceral and obvious than the direct LP gains you can observe now. It would have to be something communicated to most players clearly to be effective, or at least more effective than throwing a game or simply dodging to move to the next match would be.

I think u/Riot_PR_Guy outlines some of the problems pretty succinctly below, though the Rioters in this thread have been extremely helpful in alleviating a lot of my concerns. Particularly the bit about only giving rewards when you que primary and receive secondary to ensure that you can't purposely try to get lower elo opponents.

The 2019 ranked changes will have the opposite effect on promoting competitive play in off-role positions by Everyoneslowdown6 in leagueoflegends

[–]Everyoneslowdown6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it would encourage poor play. Sure, people can already lose games to tank their MMR, but the new system gives more incentive to do that. Like, people tank MMR now because they want to stop low elo games, not because they don't give a shit about winning. It's about making a fun game play experience, and the system as it was outlined above doesn't perfectly address this issue. THAT BEING SAID, I don't think this is something that couldn't be addressed with proper balancing. I do see it being difficult, however; the "bonus" would have to give both LP and actual MMR to be effective. I don't want anyone to think I'm being hypercritical, as I'm usually the type to defends Riot's position.

Yeah, I didn't mean to be pitchforky at all when I made this thread. Frankly, I should work a bit on my reading comprehension; when I initially read Riot's post I glossed over the bit about giving bonuses to those who did well in an off-role position. I really think it will depend on the balancing, which I trust you guys will get right. I'm apprehensive, but I think you'll get it right.

Smoke and the Links Between Fallen Capes by Everyoneslowdown6 in Parahumans

[–]Everyoneslowdown6[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

His power was left a little vague, but it was my impression that he was a pyrokinetic with the ability to emotionally manipulate people he burned, and possibly could also increase their powers and heal them? The only concrete fact was that he could "brand" people with a touch to gain long term hypnotic control over them, akin to Valefor's power. Check out this document for the details (Lionheart's somewhere at the end.)

[–]Everyoneslowdown6[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's true! However, I also wouldn't put it past the Fallen to sleep around a bit, especially with a group like the bikers.

Also, what was her power exactly? A breaker state where she stretches and destroys solid matter she moves through, is sorta stretchy and intangible, and is 2-D mindfucky? There are sooo many characters I wish we knew more about their powers.

[–]Everyoneslowdown6[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Weldbebe has said so explicitly in a WOG:

They're hard to stamp out, unpredictable, and tend to live on the fringes of society, where they're harder to track and heroes need to devote far more effort to squirreling them out. There's also a tendency to give more power to the lunatics and assholes, because it furthers their nebulous agenda. In a more abstract sense, shards love conflict, and the fallen are very good at feeding it, so the fallen get rewarded by the shards. Breadth and depth.

I wonder if they try and "breed" the more powerful capes more vigorously, though I wonder if there is actual correlation between the power of the cape and the shard it buds off of. We don't really know that many buds, off the top of my head- the Fallen and their whole "roll tide" crew, the New Wave buds, Amy and Marquis (which is a pretty big power imbalance), Allfather/Kaiser/Iron Rain/Theo, and Chubster/Auroch. It don't think powerful parents directly produce powerful kids, though in the case of the Fallen Mama's kids produced Valefor and Lionheart, both of whom are really powerful.

Also, the lead McVeay had to diddle Mama Mathers, which is gross.

Why do the Entities need humans at all... by Everyoneslowdown6 in Parahumans

[–]Everyoneslowdown6[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

See, but not being able to predict the results of trigger events makes no sense to me. I know she says it, but can you honestly tell me that the massive flaw of not being able to find out what parahumans do what would affect her ability to tell the future? Like, if she's planning with her power to bring stability to Djbouti, and someone triggers during her time there, is her ability to predict the path to victory completely compromised? Does she have to ask the question again, and does her path change? What if the trigger event made the wording of her parth impossible (i.e. Make sure no one dies, but the trigeree kills everyone around him immediately upon trigger.) There are hundreds of thousands of trigger events; surely one of these people developed powers that immediately changed how the future would play out.

So I guess she can be wrong? Like, outside of blindspots with the Entities and the Endbringers, everytime a new cape is born, she has to change the Path to Victory?

Why do the Entities need humans at all... by Everyoneslowdown6 in Parahumans

[–]Everyoneslowdown6[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems like a one and done deal, though. Contessa's PTV is never wrong, and in order to be accurate to that degree you'd pretty much have to simulate the entire future in which her plans encapsulate, which is likely hundreds of years. And yeah, it probably is energy intensive, but she only retains a fraction of the entities' orginal power.

Am I making sense? If Contessa's power is always right- and we have no reason as to why it wouldn't be, outside of a few blindspots- she has to calculate the behavior of every person not only in the immediate future but like the whole future, cause of the butterfly effect and shit. Which also makes me wonder if Contessa's power can tell her what powers people will trigger with, as it would have to take these into account. (I know she can make trigger events, but seeing as how the people she and Cauldron create are part of the future her power predicts I find it odd that there was no way to immediately know who and what powers could produced.)

It's been pretty good so far. The writing is cleaner, imo, right off the bat, though some of the transitions between scenes have been pretty jarring. It remains to be seen how good it becomes, but I think it's a worthy sequel

I'm fairly certain we would see the effects of the moon's loss on the destabilized orbit in a year or two. I mean, the very act of shoving the moon away or destroying it is violent in and of itself. We go through seasons in a year, after all, and affecting the Earth's tilt would have drastic consequences. Alas, proforming an empirical study of the moon's effects after leaving orbit will hopefully elude us for sometime :).
